Dobinsons Suspension - 4th Gen Options

Hey Mike,

I have an idea of what I would like to run, but I wanted to run it by you before I put my order in:

Front:
C59-296 coils/ GS59-220 Struts

Rear:
C59-675V Coils/ GS59-575 Shocks

It's an '09 V6 with a roof tent that I keep on it year round. I have Moog FJ Cruiser springs on it now and I don't have a problem with sagging, even when I'm loaded with camping gear, so I'm not too worried about that. I just wanted to make sure that the springs I've picked will be tall enough for the LT shocks (with proper bumpstops), and that the vehicle will sit level. Thanks for your time!

Hey bud,

So that won't give you too much lift up front, about 2.5" to 2.75" I'd say, and then about 2" in the rear with the RTT. You'll still have about 1" to 1.5" of rake I'd guess.

Yes, those coils and LT shocks work hand in hand with the bump stops.

Ok awesome. Would you recommend I go with the 677v springs in the rear to keep it more level? My only concern is making the ride too harsh without having a rear bumper/tire carrier.

You could. The final spring rate of the 677V isn't high at all so they aren't rough even when the truck is empty.

I'm looking for my first lift kit. I've been recommended Bilstein with OME springs and it seems affordable but in chats I always see people saying how they'd choose Dobinson over Bilstein. So I'm here looking for your help.

How much would the set up that boilas has cost?

Rear suspension setup suggestions

Hey Mike, I've got a 2007 4Runner V6 4x4. My current front suspension setup is a pair of Dobinsons GS59-220 black extended travel struts, w/ C59-302 red coils, paired w/ Icon Delta Joint Upper Control Arms, Icon sway bar relocation bracket and a 1” Diff Drop, new swaybar end links, and wheelers superbumps. The rear has Dobinsons CS59-705 Black Shocks w/ Icon 2” Rear Coil Springs, along with a OME 10mm Polyurethane Rear Coil Trim Packer (Driver side), new swaybar end links, extended brake lines, and wheelers superbumps. I'm looking to change out the rear suspension for something that is more balanced with the front suspension. I'm guessing the rear is a bit soft compared to the front. Not looking to go long travel. Will be adding the Rigd Ultraswing to the rear. Carrying extra weight in back for trips, but mostly empty otherwise. Also, have aluminum roof rack, and aluminum full skid plates. Will be adding rock sliders at some point. What would you recommend for the rear? I appreciate your input.

What sort of lift height do you have? If you could measure your front and rear hub to fender measurements, I could see where you're at now to give you suggestions.

There's 2"-2.5" options then there's 3" for the rear, with the slight weight you'll be adding.

I think the 675V would be maybe a bit taller than what you have on there now, but pretty soft. I don't think they'd support the weight well enough.

327's should be right at 2" with your weight (24" hub to fender)

The 677V should be about 2.5" based on where your 2" current springs are sitting now.

Yeah, the 705's are intended for an empty truck, so the 701's would be more ideal. You could put in the coils and see how you like it first before spending any money, then if you decide you need more support in the ride, then you could upgrade the shocks.

I had actually purchased Moog FJ coils but the more I read about them I saw a lot of examples where they wouldn't seat correctly and the ride was questionable so I decided I only wanted to replace my suspension once so I should do it right and go with Dobinsons.

I'm only about 20 miles in (all on road so far) but I'm really happy with how everything rides and looks. I previously had the stock XREAS suspension with Daystar leveling spacers in the front. Considering it had 135k it still rode fine but was getting a bit tippy and bouncy. That feeling is gone now and it feels firm and stable but not harsh at all.

With 265/70r17 tires here are my approximate old and new measurements (hub to fender):

Old (stock XREAS, Daystar leveling spacers in front):
Front Driver: 21
Front Passenger: 21
Rear Driver: 21
Rear Passenger: 21

New (Dobinsons 300/599, Bilstein 5100s at 0):
Front Driver: 22
Front Passenger: 22 1/2
Rear Driver: 23 1/4
Rear Passenger: 23 1/4

The stance is perfect and I definitely got more lift than advertised due to my saggy old springs. Very happy with how it turned out.

I consider hub to fender 20" front and 22" rear to be a baseline (that's an average of what they were when new, same as a 5th Gen), so with your 22" front (2" over stock/new) and 23.25" (1.25") rear lift, you're right on the money with where it should be. The rear will settle a bit more most likely though over 500 miles.

I didn’t measure ground clearance specifically, just the standard hub to fender (before/after is noted above). It feels more sturdy and stable now. Firm but not harsh. XREAS was fine but had started to feel a little floaty and bouncy especially over uneven terrain or bumps there would be a lot of body roll back and forth. All of that is gone now. 300/599 coils are a great option for anyone looking for a mild lift that doesn’t need to support a bunch of excess weight with bumpers, etc. The ride is great and in my case with replacing an aging suspension, it rides better than stock did for me.
