Dobinsons Suspension - 4th Gen Options

Alright, it looks like my X-REAS is completely toast and time to upgrade. I currently have a Daystar 2.5/1.5" spacer lift. It seems to be about the right lift for me, considering what I do (light offroad, forest roads, daily driver) and not needing all the extra upgrades like diff drop, etc. If anything I don't mind dropping a half inch.

I have a storage box setup in the back that is probably around 150lbs that doesn't get taken out. When I go out I don't take too much extra stuff, maybe another 100-200 lbs total, and no aftermarket bumpers or anything.

Suggestions for shock/spring combos?

Seems like we were going through a long spell there where everyone's XREAS was fried and everyone had to replace it!! Bound to happen sooner or later.

Sure, you could just do 2" front and 1" rear, reduce the angles and lift height a little bit, running the twin tube struts and shocks would definitely be enough for what you do with it.

Here's what I'd suggest:
C59-300 front 2" coils for a V6
GS59-221 front struts
GS59-599 rear 1"-1.25" coils
GS59-705 rear comfort shocks

That's it. No UCA's or any other parts are required. All of that can be selected on this page here:
Dobinsons Lift Kit for Toyota 4Runner 4x4 2003-2009 (all options 0-3.5")

Those coils front and rear are in stock in black or teal right now, and the struts in yellow, rear shocks in black or yellow.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Awesome, thanks! And if I wanted to stick with the 2.5"/1.5", what changes to that setup do I need?

What's the difference between dobinsons and OME?
1. The range. In post #1, you'll see a much bigger range and variety of coils, struts, shocks, and other related parts.
2. Price, some Dobinsons parts are less expensive than OME.
3. Lift height options. Dobinsons offers a much broader range of lift height.
4. Long travel rear options and variable rate rear springs - OME doesn't offer this

There are also a lot of similarities between the 2 brands, but also among many different Australian brands. Twin tubes are the standard replacement aftermarket shock in Australia, and that's what most people use because of their durability in terrible road conditions.

What's the tallest lift you offer? Right now I'm running the OME 90000/ 2886 & OME 60004/ 2895.

I wanted to post up and express my thanks to Crikeymike for answering my billion questions about setups. He always responded quickly and addressed everything I needed to know.

I just hit the "Place Order" button at Exit Offroad for a full Dobinsons package to replace my tired Bilstein/OME setup and I don't think I would've been able to piece together the perfect setup without the details I got from Mike.

Fantastic service and support!!!

I has a similar experience with Crikeymike. I already knew what I wanted but the 701s were on backorder. ExitOffroad shipped out everything they had in stock as soon as it was ready and kept me up to date with tracking every step of the way.

Yeah man!! It should ship out soon too, so be sure to take photos and post them up here when you're all done!!

Hey CrikeyMike,

I tried to send you a PM but not sure if it worked.

Can you tell me more about this setup?

Dobinsons 1-3.5" Pre-Assembled IMS Coilovers for Toyota 4Runner 4th Gen
Select Coil Spring Color:
Teal, Dobinsons Classic Color

Select Lift Height:
3.0" Lift

Confirm Added Front End Weight:
Stock Weight

What Engine Size?:
V8 Engine

What coils are these? I am looking to replace a spacer front lift with a coilover. I already have some SPC's that will be installed when I get coilovers. I also tried to PM you for exclusive pricing, again not sure if that worked or not.

I got the same PM twice from you, and just replied.

You'd use C59-314 and set the coil seat height appropriately.

I received everything from Exit Offroad early last week (fast shipping!!) and was able to install everything at home this weekend. The pics and measurements below are after about 30 miles of driving so things could still settle a bit. Here is the list of goodies:

FRONT:
GS59-220 struts (1" lift)
C59-300 springs (1.5" lift)
1/4" spacer installed on left front

REAR:
GS59-705 shocks
C59-505 springs (1.5" lift)

Measurements:
Left Front = 22.5" (with a spacer....the lean is REAL people!)
Right Front = 22.75"
Left Rear = 22.75"
Right Rear = 22.75"

The ride is ridiculously good and a huge improvement over my tired old setup of Bilstein/OME/Toytec bits that have been on for about 6 years. The small, sharp bumps that used to kill my kidneys are still noticeable but nowhere near as harsh. Everything feels very solid and planted. Cornering has improved with a noticeable decrease in body roll.

I was hoping the rear was going to be a bit higher (my Toytec Superflex's measured at 23" so it came down a bit with the 505 springs) so if it settles much more, I think I will be installing Dobinson's 15mm spacers on both sides. I think the rear spacers would put me between 23" and 23.5" depending on settling.

That looks great!! You wasted no time in getting it installed!!

About to take the plunge, 2008 v6 limited 4wd w/xraes. Any significant ride quality difference between the twin tube and IMS struts? Ship times about the same? Mostly used on road but if there are gains to be had there with the upgrade I may do it. Will be doing a 2inch front/rear lift with Dobinson UCA's and OEM LCAs. Freshen everything up while I'm in there.

There isn't much difference on the road, but when you go offroad, the IMS feel considerably different to the twin tubes. The bigger piston size really absorbs bumps and hits a lot better. The IMS never really over heat, and everyone reports back that they definitely worth the upgrade if they've ran both.

Yeah, TT and IMS are both in stock. It's more coils that are out right now than anything else.

Thanks, I am looking for a 2inch lift all around so I think front C59-300 and rear C59-325 for stock weight v6.
