Does the spare tire carrier wreck alloy rims?

Hi, I need a new set of tires (I guess I'll get some KO2's 265/75/16) and I don't think I trust the 19 year old spare so I will get 5 new tires. I want to rotate the spare through with the others so I want it to be on the same alloy rim as the others. This is the 16" split 3 spoke. Will the rear tire holder bracket wreck the center of the alloy wheel because it's steel? I actually had to re-weld the bracket because it rusted on and a PO took a grinder to it to remove it, so it isn't perfectly flat anymore so I guess the answer is yes. I'll have to put some abrasion barrier between them, maybe rubber but I don't know how that will hold up to the vibrations. Any ideas?

It shouldn’t hurt the wheel. The part that draws up into the center of the wheel is contoured to sit in the bore. If you draw it up tight enough, it shouldn’t really move at all, so it should be safe.
I have a full size spare on a Tundra split spoke wheel on mine. It’s been under there for about 4 years now, no problems at all.

Some sort of thin rubber gasket may help too, like you said, or possibly a coat of Plastidip on the bracket thing.

I'm running an ally spare, so I can have a spare that clears my TBU. But the advice above is good, I might drop mine and put a piece of rubber between that and the bracket holder thingy
my spare is a KO2 265/75/16 and it barely fits up there, but it does with a little extra love and wiggle into place

Rubber would probably compress and break apart over time. I'd worry more about the bracket seizing to the wheel. Coat it with antiseize or fluid film at the center bore.

97 here and I run an alloy spare and without having to roll under and look, my memory tells me I had to reverse how the spare was carried to store it properly. No issues since I reversed the carry from the steel rim but you idea would work quite well I think. Use an old tire piece....
