Does this sound acceptable? (another headlights thread! yay!)

I called and informed the service department of the new TSB that's out. They called me back and said that since I'm over 36K miles that they would cover either the labor or the parts, whichever is the greater amount.

Does that sound ok to you all? I figured I should get some outside opinions before saying yay or nay. Never had to deal with a TSB issue before, so I don't know precisely how it should work.

Get the parts and install yourself. I can remove my bumper in about ten minutes. Changing out headlights takes another ten. Aiming them? Maybe another five.

And why didn't you post this in the TSB thread?
 
Id like to know as well since i am 236 miles out of warranty. I do have documentation in my service records of the hazing issue and having them buff it out...only for it to return.
 
Having taken off the front bumper on my truck twice, once to put my retroed lights in, I would recommend getting the parts and installing them yourself.

I have my old set in boxes and might bring them in to get exchanged and then sell them to someone that wants to get their lights retroed.

they probably won't let you install it yourself because they would want the originals headlights as a core i'm assuming.. i'm getting mine done soon, i've got a friend at 355 Toyota :) i've got just 97mi of warranty left too!

Call the dealer, explain the situation, and they should correct it for no charge particularly since they saw and attempted to correct the issue while you were in warranty. If they don't, call Toyota Motor Sales directly and they will take care of you.

Toyota doesn't want to piss off customers for over $400 in warranty work.
 
I just went over 36k this week on our vacation. I have had my headlights buffed out at least 3x at the dealer. I wonder if my extended warranty will make the fact that I am over 36k miles a non-issue.

Yes. Best $ you ever spent. These types of things usually dont end up in your favor unless you are still under warranty...even if extended.
 
maybe I am not understanding the TSP thing.... I thought that a TSB can be performed at ANY time.... or does it have to be a recall? If not then as suggested get the parts and do it yourself.
 
I just had my headlights replaced at 355 toyota under warranty (96mi left) and had a few other concerns noted so hopefully if they get worse the dealer will take care of it.. (headliner rattle when door shuts or really rough road, windows squeek when they are wet) as of now, i'm a happy camper.

TSB ("Technical Service Bulletin") are typically only done if your vehicle is showing the specific symptom, you tell them, and it's under the 3yr/36k warranty. (I am not 100% on extended, so I shant try to become a warranty admin here, but I'd venture to say that they would probably do it for you.)

A recall, on the other hand, is where they acknowledge something that could be a serious safety risk, or has caused accidents as a result. When a recall is issued, it does not matter how many miles, etc.

Hope that helps to solve "some" of your questions, but the bottom line is that a TSB and a recall are two very different things.

Thank you for letting us know what that TLA meant. I've tried looking for a crib or a glossary on this site to no avail.
 
I got them replaced. The dealership paid for the parts (over $500 for headlight assemblies? what even) and I paid for the labor, so it wasn't too bad.
