*Does this sound right? The "new updated" crankshaft bolt now has a washer.

It was told, and shown 2 crankshaft bolts by a previous toyotec and he says there is a "new updated" bolt that has a large thick washer on it. It could be possible to help prevent loosening. Has anyone seen or purchased one of these? Are the old style bolts no longer recommended?

When I purchased that bolt from the dealer it was the updated one. If i can remember correctly the washer and the bolt are one piece. I assume that the updated one is better if the dealer is selling it? I never had a problem with the original, but for 8$ it seemed silly not to replace it when I did my timing belt.

Thanks I just wanted to know at least 1 other person has heard of this. The "updated" bolt I was shown did have a non-removable washer.

It's specified as non-reusable in the FSM. I bought a timing belt kit from eBay. Many had pulleys, belts, tensioners, water pump, etc. but not one had a crank bolt - go figure. I had to buy one separately.

That is the number that the Toyota parts dept. told me was for my 96. It does not have a washer attached. I believe when the torque specs for the crank bolt increased from 184 lbs for 1996-98 to 217 lbs for 1999-2002, the crank bolt was changed to one with a washer for the additional torque pressure.

This is the updated bolt 90119-16006

This is the old one, 90105-16031, still sold for the pre-'99's, although I don't know why. I suspect they didn't want to recall the trucks that are out there.

This is the part that I bought last week from Toyotapartszone (there is no part update). BTW, my 96 FSM says 193 ft-lb (not 185), my 2002 FSM says 217 ft-lbs.

I am getting at the fact that the bolts and torque specs changed midrun of the 3rd gens. The Toyota parts guy told me there were several other changes in the crankshaft area including the keyway. If properly torqued there was probably no problem with the bolts coming loose but they made several changes for some reason.

I can't find any change other than the bolt. Crank, HB, and sprocket all return the same number for all years on ToyoDIY. But who am I to argue with a Toyo counter guy?

I'm doing a timing/water pump change in about 2 weeks and glad I ran across this thread beforehand. So I'll order the crank bolt with the large washer for my 96...might as well while I'm doing it I guess.
