Doing my own 5k service......tire rotation ?

I'm due for the 5k service. From what I can tell from maintainence manual it's ck this,ck that.....tire rotation. I know the ck nonsense is BS. So I figure ( I know it's free but I'm afraid the wrench monkeys at the dealership are gonna scratch my wheels ) I'll do the tire rotation myself in front of the house. I have a jack and 2 stands. Gonna need to purchase 2 more to get the whole vehicle off the ground and do the cross rear to front pattern done. I think I saw that here or its in the OM.
Anyway, that being said. I have a torque wrench. And am gonna set to 83lbs.
My concern is about the lug bolt "stretch" that's talked about on this forum. I'm concerned if when I remove the wheel and get it to the next location and tighten the nuts down I get the "spinning" or "snapped off" result.
Whaddya u guys think??

You might want to do a re-read of the OM. I doubt it has changed from the attached 2010 version.

It's a free service, I just had mine done, and I made a point of walking around my vehicle with the service writer to make him aware that if I see any marks or scratches on my car when I get it back, I will be talking to the SM.
He was very polite and asked if I wanted it washed" ignoring the screaming (NOOOOOOOOOO) in my head I politly declined.
Unless you know your Toyota dealership are crooks and thieves, give them a chance to do you some good, I was pleasantly pleased with my first service.
I hope you are too if you give them a chance.

I second that. If they messed up everyone's cars, they would go out of business quickly. To each is own.

You can do it without more jack stands. Lift the front, put on stands, lift rear from the differential and rotate tires. Just don't crawl under it.

Ya I do my own tire rotations. Always have. It's no big deal as long as you don't mind doing it. I don't like other people working on my cars if I can help it. Some things you just won't be able to do.

This is a very timely thread for me. I just went over 25K so no more free services for me. I just ordered a new impact wrench so I can do my own tire rotations.

I don't plan to torque the lug nuts with the impact wrench. I'll put them on but then torque with a proper torque wrench.

Take a look at the link Froggy posted. The tires don't get crossed, they stay on the same side, front to goes to rear, rear goes to front. I've done mine 3 times now, torqued the lug nuts to 83 ft lbs and have never had an issue.

Like oil changes, I'm not trusting something so simple to the bozos at dealer. I think dealers use some sort of calculation where the simplest jobs go to the laziest, least experienced tech. He'll then scratch your wheels, over tighten your lug nuts, fail to put all the bolts back in your skid plate, etc.

I wouldn't bother unless they show some signs of uneven wear. Actually I have NEVER rotated my tires on any vehicles I've ever owned. I think it's just a waste of time since I don't drive enough to wear them out so they go bad from old age here in the heat or get so many punctures they won't hold air and have to be replaced before they have a chance to wear unevenly.

I'd let the dealership do it and spend your time taking a fat dog for a walk or something. Battlefield 3 is also a great use of time too...

If I were to rotate tires every 5k miles, I would be doing it every 6 weeks or so just like my oil changes.

I personally think every 10k miles for tire rotation is plenty often. On my Grand Cherokee with solid front axles that wore the edges of the tires, I only did it every 15 to 20k and they still lasted nearly 80k miles. (Yokohama Geolander AT/S tires)

I did my TE myself at 10k and I DID cross the fronts to the back and brought the back wheels directly to the front just like I have done on everything else I have owned that has not had directional tires.

At 5k all I did was change the oil and filter and grease the zerks on the drive shafts. Oh yeah and of course "inspected" all fluid levels except the transmission. I still don't fully understand the transmissions on these things. (no dipstick) but there is a plug on the bottom of the pan that if the temp is just right, I guess is supposed to drip just a little if it is full. But until I get a service manual, I an going to leave that alone.

A set of good jack stands is a necessity if you are going to service these things yourself. You have to crawl under there to grease the drive shafts and you have to have the rear wheels off the ground and the trans in neutral to spin the shafts around to get the zerks in the right angle to reach them with the grease gun.
