domestic dispute - 5th gen vs new Pathfinder

Time to replace the aging Mazda CX-9, esp since it has lost throttle response over the past several weeks. Wife wanted to drive it for another year, but it seems the 128K miles are too much for it. So she informs me this evening that she wants the new Nissan Pathfinder. I told her Nissan cut the balls off the Pathfinder when they came out with this new model. I tell her it won't measure up to the 5th gen 4Runner. She got pissed and let me know it isn't my decision.

She's right about the decision part. This is her daily driver. And she had no input on my recent mid-life crisis daily driver purchase.

At least she has agreed to test drive a 2013 4R Limited. But the drive alone isn't enough. I need ammo guys. I need to know what I can say to help persuade her. I fear the Pathfinder will give her the cushy mom-mobile ride.

I already gave her the Toyota vs Nissan reliability speech. I promised not to mod it (that was the first thing she accused me of wanting it for)...told her my V8 4R ain't going away, and I can't afford to mod another 4R.

Help me. Please. Help me. If we fight again, she'll go buy the Pathfinder without my involvement. :peep:

Shouldn't it be called the Mallfinder?

Forget the Pathfinder. Get her a Ford Explorer Sport. Trust me, you'll be happy. I'll be getting one as soon as I can rearrange the finances.
 
I'm curious Ryan, what are your reasons for going with a Explorer? It's the newer unibody style that you are talking about right?
 
You two are both so wrong.:ybrick: Get her a Prius. That way you can use all that saved gas money for a locker and KC lights and new shocks and....
 
Sounds like you may already have lost this fight.

My buddy's wife got a new Pfinder a few months ago, and while the model has indeed been neutered, I have to say that it's pretty freakin' sweet for what it is: a child toting crossover.
Power third row seats fold down flush to the floor, huge moonroof, dual DVD headrests... Those were just a few of the features he showed me. I'd never drive one, but if you've got kids who are in the car a lot it's a pretty plush ride dude. It could certainly be worse. If she was truly ruthless she'd go test drive an Odessey or a Town & Country. Then you'd be stuck here: The Chrysler Minivan Fan Club

Have you offered to maybe, "Remodel her kitchen"...or, a day at the salon??? Perhaps...a "CASH" incentive would seem more romantic...??

But it sounds to me like a few things got their balls shaved...





I think once she sits up in the 4runner she may be sold.
 
^^^^^listen to KV. You've got your 4runner. The pathfinders are nice for what they are. Let her choose. And I'm sure the Ford would be nice.... For about 85k miles....
 
No "dispute" here. I'm sure right now on whatever forum she frequents she's telling her cohorts all about how you were handled and dealt with in this matter.

Case closed.

I sat in a loaded Sienna last month, and I would totally drive that thing if I had a bunch of kids. Which I don't lol.

But that thing was like a living room on wheels. :beer:

My '12 Highlander was also a much better kid toter than my 4Runner.

Then I came to the realization that 99.9% of the time there is only one seat occupied in my vehicles. :hatsoff:

Summary:

1. PROMISE her all you want her to do is drive a couple other vehicles. AND that this is HER decision.

2. Get her to drive the LE, and (I suggest) a Pilot, and lastly, again the PF. Then let her choose. Get over it.

3. Suck it up. It should be HER vehicle, HER decision.

4. Report back.

I own a 2009 CX-9 and a 2010 4Runner. They are worlds apart. The CX-9 is much better for general driving and kid hauling. That being said, my wife also likes driving my truck. It is exactly that, a truck.

If you aren't going to use any of the truck like features, she really should stick with a crossover.

We love our CX-9 also btw. 70k trouble free miles.

But I like my 4Runner better ;)
 
My wife has a 2012 Limited 4runner and I have a 2013 Pathfinder Platinum. Had my pathfinder since November and it is going back to Nissan as a lemon. Just too many issues with the redesign. I love the features, the way it drives, but issues upon issues. I am sure the new Pathfinder will be great, but they need more time to work all the bugs out. Several recalls on it already...

I'm going to go against probably everyone on here... she should probably get the Pathfinder. Unless your wife does a lot of off-roading, and it doesn't sound like she does or she wouldn't be considering the Pathfinder, the Pathfinder is probably the better vehicle for her needs. My wife brought one home from work last weekend, and had had one in the past through work. It has three rows of seats, has storage compartment in the floor behind the third row. Even the more base models comes with leather wrapped steering wheel, smart key, backup camera, etc. The Pathfinder is easier to get in and out of, and ours with 4x4 still got 19 mpg city, and 27 highway, for a vehicle this big it was impressive. If she is mainly city driving and wants some peace of mind in inclement weather, the Pathfinder or as mentioned Explorer is probably a better choice.
 
The new PF is a complete miss IMO.

I dont even care about the "its not Body on Frame anymore.." chest beating BS......

The styling is just so incredibly bland. They dialed it back too far. It is one boring looking ride. I would look to a highlander or Pilot before that thing.
