my v6 2010 got about 625km on a full tank with the oem air filter, purchased a k&n air filter and lost just over 50km -_-
DONT buy K&N air filter

Driving style, ambient temperature and traffic will effect MPG way more than an air filter. Heck even a clogged filter wont reduce your mileage that much.

Yes, over oiling those aftermarket and TRD (since TRD kits are basically rebranded K&Ns anyways...) CAN coat the MAF element in a thin coating of oil that can affect its sensing ability.

while i agree with the OP...i dont agree with his reasoning. the bigger issue is the extra dirt they allow to pass into the engine.

Since we're all just bashing K&N filters here, is it really true that the oils in the fibers could also mess up vehicles with MAFs? I've read this time and time again, but not sure if that was just a myth
mostly from people who over oil them, which is just about everyone...

Well this sucks lol. I just ordered one from amazon for $45.
I don't want to use it if it lets dirt inside....
Don't understand why I haven't seen any bad reviews on oiled filters online....
The people using them have to realize they are no good before they can write a bad review and apparently they do not. Stick with OEM.

Basically the same reason BMW and Chrysler owners swear their vehicles are awesomely reliable while they hand out $$$ to get them fixed every week?
AND
There's tons of reviews both good and bad on every car forum there is in regards to aftermarket filters, both dry and oiled.

This article couldn't have said it better.
If you want to prematurely kill your engine to have a little more airflow, get a K&N which can also possibly damage your MAF sensor.
I'm sticking with stock.
Anyone want to buy a brand new unused K&N air filter for 5th gen?

All you guys had to do was ask lol.
Look at it logically:
Toyota has to make this vehicle go with no issues for a long time. If the other guy's design was so good then why doesn't the OEM's use something similar? Cost? No way. Yes they try to keep costs down but they also have to keep reliability up. I learned a long time ago if something is not broke do not try to fix it with something claiming to be better. Now, if an OEM was failing a part regularly, such as light bulbs, half shafts, etc then I would look outside for a better replacement.
Ever wonder why such things as Toyota and Honda light bulbs, windshield wipers and other consumable items last longer than the non OEM replacement part? This goes for oil and air filters too.

Well here goes nothing... :flame: I have a K&N filter on both my 4rnr and my Jeep. Its been on my 4rnr for about 15 years. The one on my Jeep since '06. Ive serviced them infrequently, basically when they were pretty dirty. I have always inspected and cleaned the intake tube and not once have I found any trace of dust, dirt whatever. I always wash them thoroughly and properly oil them afterwards. Don't overdo it. This subject always comes up on the jeep forum I'm on. They hate it too. I'm not advocating it or knocking it. Just relaying my particular experience with 'em, which has been positive. Gonna try out the Amsoil filter on my '85 Hi-Lux... fwiw
