Doors keep automatically unlocking/Key FOB won't work

Help! I've tried searching, but I'm not finding anything on my specific issue. Today, my key FOB stopped working on my 2010 4Runner. It won't lock or unlock the doors. It will set off my alarm if I hold the panic button down, but nothing on the locks. Even stranger is that when I use the lock all doors button on the inside of the truck, the doors all lock, and then automatically unlock. If I manually turn the lock on the inside of the driver's side door, it will automatically unlock all the doors right after as well. If I manually lock all the doors inside the truck, then open the driver's side door to get out, it unlocks all the doors. The only way that I can lock my truck right now is if I put the key in the driver's side door after I get out and do the double turn thing.

I'm starting to think that Gremlins have been messing with my truck... The sunroof controls were operating oddly the other day as well. It would pop up when I hit the slide button forward when it was closed, and it would slide when I hit the pop up button.

Hi Boog,

It sounds like you have a door ajar; check and be sure that all 5 doors are shut TIGHT! That too will create the symptoms that you've described, Rgds!

I don't have a door ajar light on, but that did cross my mind... was camping over the weekend and had the tailgate packed. Thing is, I've unloaded the truck and it's still doing it. Could be something stuck in the tailgate gasket?

Not an expert by any means, but I would also recommend checking all your doors. Really inspect the doors and look for any signs of damage or anything that could cause one to theoretically be shut, but not locked down 100% (if that makes any sense). If this doesn't result in anything, probably should have a shop look at it.

I'm inclined to agree with jwatson statement; just because the door ajar icon or the interior courtesy lamps aren't on doesn't mean that the security system concurs that the vehicle is secure. Just try slamming all 5 doors and check it again. If that doesn't resolve the issue inspect all of the doorjams, door switches, latches...etc.

If that's N/G, disconnect the NEG battery cable and leave it disconnected for a full four hours; this procedure will RESET the security system ECU, returning it to it's default factory settings...it may have locked up; much like a windows computer when you receive a notification that: 'This program is not responding... "Kill or Wait"?' Let us know what you find!

Well, that wasn't it. Checked all the doors and the tailgate, and didn't notice anything unusual.

I don't suspect a 'door ajar' situation, because (on mine anyway) attempting to fob-lock with a door ajar results in a constant tone from the beeper.

I do recall having your same thing happen to me before, and it was because of something I did - like leave the keys in it, or the headlights on, something dumb like that. Maybe check the owner's manual?

How old is the car battery? Have you tried your other fob? Did you do anything on the car right before this started?

I'd do the battery reset before troubleshooting much further.

I just remembered that when I installed the aftermarket front door speakers I inadvertently failed to secure one of the doorlock harness connectors. After I buttoned everything up and drove off diggin' my newly modified system, I parked at a buddy's house, attempted to lock it up with the key fob and the doors wouldn't lock... they just chattered (locked and then unlocked rapid firing)! I pulled the inner trim panel back off, secured (latched) the harness connector, tested it and it was back to normal; very strange behavior but that's firmware behavior, (this ain't analog)!

cheers

Neither key fob works, except for the panic button. Again the sunroof is also acting oddly. There's definitely nothing in any of the door jambs. I haven't touched anything on the truck before this happened. I'll try the ECU reset, because I suspect something is off because of the sunroof controls acting strangely as well.

Well, I have no idea what the deal was, but I went out to try and reset the ECU, and the key FOB was suddenly working again. Whatever it was, it's worked itself out after 3 days :noidea:
