Doug Thorley headers for 5TH Gens

Probably be over 300hp with a new exhaust.

I doubt 300 at the wheels but probably at the flywheel.

I had these long tubes on my 06 Tacoma with URD y-pipe and full exhaust for awhile and really liked it but wanted to stay emissions legal so I took it all back off. It was a little loud:biggrin2:

Who wants to bet Harper has the first supercharged 5th in the USA?

I hope that TRD comes out with a supercharger soon. I love URD's products but I would not run their supercharger if I were you on your truck. Its not made to hit the dirt. The X-Runners do great with them and put down 400 rwhp on the STREET with all the extra goodies.

Gary, did you have a chance to install the headers over the weekend?

Yep, I put them on Saturday night.I still have the stock exhaust on from the headers back so not that much difference in sound, except maybe a little deeper.
Seat of the pants dyno guestimates 15-20hp gain and a pretty good gain in torque too.Feels like that low end bog, like with the wheels cut from a start that the 5ths have,is greatly reduced or all but gone. 2 days of driving, about 50 miles, after resetting my mpg is showing 19.1mpg. I was showing only 17.4 with these big BFG KM2's I'm running.

The install was a royal pain in the arse!Took me a good 6+ hours as I had to remove my skids first too.I won't being doing anybody elses for sure.A The drivers side I thought would be easier turned out to be the much harder side.
Because these engines are studded with such long studs there was little room to work. These are some sweet aluminum heads and blocks on these babies BTW.So I had to remove the steering shaft and relocate the front diff breather line forward on that side.

The o2 sensor connector plug that has to be disconnected can't hardly even be seen on the drivers side, and is in behind the exh. manifold in the back by the firewall. Took about a frustrating hour to get it disconnected just by feel like Houdini. My hands have nicks and cuts all over them as I could'nt wear gloves alot of the time as you have to be able to feel as you cant see and there are alot of sharp heatshields down there.
Then I ended up having to take apart the crossover,y-pipe,second set of cats and exhaust back to the muffler to have room to get the old manifolds down and out and the headers in.

Checked on having true duals and a Magnaflow muffler put on this morning since I still have my Budbuilts off and the guy wanted $1100 for the custom duals in stainless. That was with cutting the rear cats off my stock exhaust and welding them on the new pipes but eliminating that crossover on the bottom.Coming out behind the center diff between the gas tank instead and wrapping it in heat wrap where it crosses over.A little more then I want to spend on exhaust at the moment, last time was only $650, so might just put a Magnaflow muffler on for a couple hundred and keep the rest of the stock pipes for now.

Here are a couple of pics.
Drivers side...that steering shaft with the pink stripe had to come out. It's a new kind with built in dampener and a universal. Alot easier then the old type with the round rubber disk and 4 bolts that attach it.

Passenger side
Manifold removed and a shot of the manifold gaskets and exhaust ports on the head. They use a stainless alloy metal of some kind for gaskets that is doubled and they were like brand new.

SWEET - glad to hear positive things on both power and gas mileage.

Also good to hear (or not hear) that they didn't add a lot of sound with your stock set-up. VA has pretty strict aftermarket exhaust laws...as in you can't have one.

I wonder if it'd still pass my emissions inspections without the pre-cats?

Harper7,

Do you mind posting a sound clip before replacing the muffler? I'd be interested to get a good idea of the sound with the stock muffler. I am definitely looking for a little more power and mpg but not much more tone.

Who am I kidding? I will probably pull the trigger on these anyways....

Hey harper, wondering if you can get a soundclip or video of some sort? Did you ever get that exhaust? Wondering how loud this is with aftermarket exhaust.

+1. I need to hear what this 6cyl sounds like with a good exhaust. I have this Honda ricer paranoia that can only be cured by a nice video of Harper's tailpipe. Hah!

No sound clip yet but it's pretty loud when you get on it.When at idle and cruising at 70mph ,you can barely hear it.There is a ricer rasp at about ~2200 rpm but not that bad unless you downshift and keep it there. After all these are 6 banger ricer motors !!lol.

I tried the other day with just the video camera sitting in the truck and it did'nt pick up very good. Did'nt have time last weekend with all my daughters activities.:biggrin2:

I have had mine on now for 2 weeks now and overall I am not all that impressed to tell you the truth. I can tell you that the sound difference is barely noticeable with the stock exhaust. I don't notice much of a difference inside as well as outside, I would describe it as negligible. As far as the power increase is concerned, I am not all that impressed as well. I can feel a slight change in power/torque from the start /rolling start. But it is really not that much of a difference, so little that I am not even sure if I am just feeling a difference just because I need to justify the mod. I am now on my second tank of gas and I am seeing less than 1mpg increase in gas mileage. I was really hoping for about 2mph increase in efficiency as it was my real justification for buying them. I do quite a bit of driving, 80/20 highway to city and was getting a little over 18mpg with the eco light on probably 80-90% of the time. I usually cruise about 75mph on the highway at about 2000 rpm and have not changed my driving habits. After my first tank I am calculating about 18.9mpg (although the computer is saying I am averaging about 17mpg). I will see how this second tank goes in a few days or so, but I am estimating about the same.
Lastly, the overall price of this mod was a little over $1000 (headers, O2 simulator, labor) since I need to have someone install them for me. I was pretty excited about this mod but I am not too sure about that anymore.
Side note......I printed out all the good tips that Harper left on this thread and brought them to the shop, so as to expedite the install and save some labor hours. Well they never even looked at them despite me explaining the tips, so that annoyed me a little since they had the same issues he had.

I would say that it will take some time for the ECU to make adjustments for the new mods. Sometimes that's not taken into account. Like when you disconnect the battery for some time, hook it back up, and now the car/truck feels more powerful...

See what it looks like in a couple of tanks.

I was actually wondering if that was possibly an issue. I will def let ya know in a few tanks as I will be keeping an eye on it.

Have you looked into the MAF calibrator?
Underdog Racing Development

Ah yes.....that was one of my slight worries as I had a '07 subie that had mods. Once I went with the new CAI, after a exhaust, it was time for some ECU tuning, so I wasn't sure if this was necessary with headers on my 4R. I will def email URD to see what they say as they have been very helpful thus far. I am a little surprised they didn't recommend this part when purchasing the headers after reading about the MAF calibrator, it seems like a god idea to use...at this point, what's another 200 bucks.

Thanks for the info, I will def post what URD says about adding this to the header install.

OK so my 4th tank of gas and my mpg has dropped to over 1mpg from before the headers. I am now down to 17.0 and hovering right around there with no change in driving habits.

URD said that the MAF calibrator would help but they also said that I am the first person who was not "ecstatic" about these headers. I am keeping a log of my mpg to see how this goes.

IMO a better flowing muffler would help immensely. The Magnaflow mufflers are some of the best flowing and not that loud. Did you disconnect your battery so it would reset the ECU.Most people that put headers are are looking to improve acceleration and better gas mileage is just a by product. Not too many hypermilers put on headers to improve gas mileage.

I am one of the ones that are ecstatic about my headers but I'm the type that drives it like I stole it alot of the time. Definite acceleration increase on mine, especially after I put a new muffler on.I think my gas mileage went up but don't check it or care really.I did at first and noticed about a 1 mpg increase. When it's near empty I fill it up!
