Downey rear 4th gen coils?

OK, I think I see what you are saying; that the Downey photo is showing only the components of the front coilover - struts, coils etc. The rear coils are not being shown.

I am seriously considering the Downey system, front and rear. Pricey compared to the cheaper spacer approach but being an engineer I like to do things right and do it once.

My main concern is that I don't want a harsh ride and frankly I am spoiled by my 4Runner's stock ride.

Downey sent me the catalog for free and the detail in the engineering of the front Bilstein coilover assembly is great. The rear coil and shocks also come with a new longer, braided brake. line. Good attention to detail.


I am looking for opinions of folks who have actually installed the lift as opposed to second hand knowledge.

PS: when it comes to work mixups I love folks who say "mute" point instead of "moot" point

I had this system on my 4runner and it worked like a charm. Their system is soft but plush enough that you won't notice that it's lifted. The ride and feel is definitely like stock and the rear is soft as heck. It's definitely good for someone that doesn't do any of the extreme offroading stuff. I beat my 4runner with that suspension in Moab and it handled superbly but I won't recommend doing that on a regular basis.

Thanks for the quick feedback. I will be running the White Rim road in Canyonlands in April and will have loaded two other adults and all of our gear in the 4Runner. I don't want to bash the bottom on rocks on Hogsback or the other sections that get bad. On the other hand I don't want the wife complaining about the ride being harsh or losing a lot of gas mileage. The 4Runner will still have to be a "family" vehicle....

I went and looked at your mods in other threads and on your web site. Oh my god, in a good way you are totally nuts. Love the craftmanship of the rear bumper. Engineering and art blended as one.

A lot of people complain that the Down yrear coils are too soft but I think if you want something closest to stock, then these are the coils to get.

If you want something a little bit stiffer but not that much I would recommend the OME's:

Front: 884 (medium) coil and N140S shocks
Rear: 895 (medium coils and N141 shocks

N142 if you want it to be abit stiffer (good for heavier loads in the rear).

I sat in a 4runner w/ the OME setup with all mediums and it road superbly well. So that is another alternative solution.
