DOWNPOUR11's Build Thread

I had FOA coilovers on one of my previous trucks that a built a mid-travel setup for. They were good quality and rode pretty nice. One nice thing about them is the threads on the coilover are deep and wide so they won't get grimmy and filled with rust causing issues with adjusting the collar. For some that's a plus others in warm states could care less.

Ultimately, I would choose a different brand because the FOA don't have much in regards to rebuilding them. Other brands like king or saw every single component of the shock has a replacement and rebuilding them is effortless, while the FOA lack the same amount of parts available.

that's some good info to know. how long did you run them? how much abuse? my runner is street legal but not exactly a daily driver. i'll drive it to and from the trail and out on hunting trips but it'll live in my shop for the rest of the time inbetween. which is why i'm not trying to dump an insane amount of money but still want a decent set of shocks that'll last for a reasonable amount of time.

They didn't seem all that much cheaper than the King's once you buy springs

I see you ended up going 14", despite previous concerns, why the change?

i noticed that too.

did you decide to change your design plan for the front?

Honestly; price, reviews, and customer service. From what I've read, one of the workers/developers use to work for King as well, but I obviously can't verify. For how I use my truck they should work great. (4) FOA's w/ (4) air bumps is a good $500+ less than everything else. My truck is used as a DD/Weekend trail rig/rock crawler/camping rig and these should suffice. I'm over budget, and the reviews on these shocks had me sold for what I'd use them for.

BUT... sorry guys I didn't mean to mislead - I won't go into crazy detail because it's boring, but I should be able to fit these in the front. I'm aiming for 26"-27" tops frame height. I will know for sure Monday and will be placing the order on something... who knows, I might switch it up, but I doubt it.

Have you considered talking to Brian with 4wheelunderground about their Radflow packages?

Shock Tuning/4Wheel Underground

One of my first considerations was Radflo... but $$$, they'd be nice, but I'm considering all options.

That's good to know, I appreciate the response. Which FOA's did you run? It shows on their website they sell seal kits to rebuild for $25 Seal Kits : FOA OFF-ROAD Shock Absorbers they also sell shim kits and replacement heims. From everything I've read, their customer service is superb. The 6 month warranty should be sufficient as well to see if there are any defects.

I ran them on a S10. 6x2.0 coilover with eibach 14x2.5x600 springs. I bought them used and according to the guy he rebuilt them just prior to selling. They were valved and setup for S10 according to him but who knows how "properly" it was done. But they rode pretty good.

Yeah dont get me wrong they have parts like shims and seal kits and I have heard great things about their customer service as well. Just that other coilovers have more replacement options and when I first read up on FOA's a couple years back a lot of the reviews people were switching to other companies just because of the "rebuild factor".

ROB, ROB, ROB..... Ive been out of town and I didn't see this. You will be very happy with coil overs. tried and true tech for sure. I know that you really wanted the ORI's because they are blue so the simple choice are Kings. LOL Really though I would go FOA, I really like the design and I think you will be happy with them, and honestly the rebuilding factor is small for you as your not running short course or rock racing where you need to be rebuilding each week. And they are fully rebuildable and tunable if I understand correctly from those who use them. I have a cousin who runs them on his desert race truck and he loves them. The only thing I might suggest is to run 2.5" and why run a remote resi? The only reason to run a remote resi is that it increases the fluid capacity to keep the shock cooler during high speed running. your a crawler not a desert racer and though you go fast you don't do it for hours on end. Remote Resi's are cool and look bling but are really not needed for you (us). Save the money and run a 2.5's. Just my 2 cents:fishing:

Sweet! Thank's for the input!

Problem is I'd now have to run 3" iD springs and they are $100ea instead of $65.... :ballchain: budget is hurting bad.

Im sure your budget is killing you bro. But here is a little more input for you.
Coils 3.0 inch ID
only 82 gets you lots closer:) and since this is your daily driver set the spring rate up just a tiny bit and run it. Don't do bumps now, save the money and do them later if you really need them. Again don't just do them because everybody else has them. They are primarily a go fast item, or used to create a progressive spring rate, you can do the same thing with dual springs. Once again just throwing things out for your consideration. :bigok:

Hey Rob, just ran across your problems you have here. Sorry to hear this, been busy with new job.

If it isn't one thing, it's another. I think since you where going to have to drop a lots of dollars into fixing all the problems, your doing the right thing and just change your set up.
Will be waiting for your final outcome on your new and improved ride.

Again, sorry to hear about the unexpected timing on this. Take care Bro.

Mini update... not very worthy... but whatever:

Switching up coilover plans AGAIN!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

ProFender coilovers. Ordering in the morning and confirmed availability. (2) 12" 2.0 Resi and (2) 14" 2.0 Resi. I'd have to go into the engine bay to fit the 14's and I'm not going to reconfigure the fuse box, evap, etc etc etc..

ARB Air Locker Compressor arrives tomorrow. Oil Pan and frame plates arrive this week. Not sure what day I'm pulling the truck in the shop but I'm ready to start cutting.... now!!!

Ordering some new wheels from summit (procomp series 52 black) since I need the ford 5x5.5 lug pattern. I've scoured the interweb classifieds and can't find crap for wheels. Unless I want some crap, and I don't wan't any crap.

Anyone in need of IFS parts, IFS suspension, rear axle, front diff, Procomp 8069 wheels.... PM me and let me know ahead of time if you want dibs. Otherwise, I'll post the classifieds when I get the parts off the truck and ready to sell.

LOL I know right - I think may actually get some sleep tonight.

Here's a video of these shocks in action at KOH from a pirate member who lives a town away from me (pretty amazing build - these 16" coilovers are on a tacoma):

it's amazing how much of a beating those things take! i've seen them in action in crawl speed but not like that. do you know what spring rate he's using? i'm curious cuz i'm thinking about ordering a formula toy chassis for my '88p/u and linking it once i recover financially from my 3rd gen build and my sons 2nd gen build that we'll be starting hopefully before the end of the year.

Here's what I found real quick. It's a lonnng thread.
There's some great info on coil over setups and how it works; this is the beginning of the conversation: Bro-coma.. getting unbro-d - Page 12 - Pirate4x4.Com : 4x4 and Off-Road Forum

Front Spring Rates--- 200/300 (the lower is 16" and upper is 14")
just for starters i have 225 psi in the shocks and 150 psi in the bumps.
