Is that noise from the left wheels when you're the wheel is turned hard over as far as it'll go? It might be the end stops. At least on the older 4runners/mini's, there's a plastic cap that goes over a bolt. Usually they fall off, or something, but the steering endstops (steel plates) hit the bolt when the wheels are hard over and make a nasty, loud grating noise. The solution , if this is your problem, is to grease the endstops.

Hey guys, have gone through the same thing you've all gone through but finally with success.
The problem is DEFFINATELY the drive shaft, specifically the yoke where the 2 sections slide in and out. Toyota has admitted to the service manager in my area that this is a design flaw (no official publication though).
After 4 lubes of this part and only getting worse (I have over 20k miles on mine now), I asked the service manager to spend some time on this problem because I'm not excepting another temporary lube fix again.
Short story -> drive shaft replaced on my 2003. It's quiet as a mouse again (grin).
I think the main challenge here is finding a good dealership that will go to bat for you. I didn't even buy the truck from this dealership, but the service manager was very fair.

Luxes and the Thump...
Not sure if anyone posted this or not.. but the GX470 has the same problem (we know that)... but Lexus DID issue a TSB on the problem and they are replacing all prop shafts if your GX470 was produced before they made a change in the factory. I am going to that the TSB (already printed it out) to my dealer to see if that helps at all.... 3 yrs of the thump and it is not getting any better. I have learned to live with it... but i really wouldn't mind if it went away.

If I remember right someone else on here tried this a few months ago and they were friends of the local Toyota service manager. I understand that Toyota did nothing. I know the Thump might bug you but it will never cause a breakdown. Had it on my 1995 Landcruiser on and off for 130K miles with no problems. I think your just going to get pissed off and unhappy with no resolution. Good luck.

Is this problem specific to the 4WD 4Runners? I was just under my 2WD V8 4Runner this past weekend and saw no grease fittings whatsoever on the front or rear U-joints on the driveshaft. Balljoints and everything else appear to be sealed as well; no real places to service with grease on the 2WD, it appears. Is this really the case, or am I missing something?
I haven't experienced any 'thump' or 'clunk' when stopping in my 4Runner with 53k miles on it.

I was told it was the floating rear calipers releasing when you come to a complete stop. Anyone else hear about this? You might want to look into this.

I too have felt this in my 04 Limited 4Runner, if you want to get this fixed do the following like i did, this worked best for me.
Simply bipass the dealership on this one. Call the Toyota Customer Service # of the website. Describe the problem and that you would like to work with the Regional Tech Specialist on this problem. I just went through this and i should have a new drive shaft installed next week. Toyota is aware of the problem and from what I could make out, is that they are not going to start a campaign to fix this problem. Greasing the axel is only a temp fix. Once the new axel is install my Regional Rep told me they can not gaurantee that it wouldnt do it again. I also worked with him to find the best dealership that had a good Service Manager to work with. The Service Manager is going to make sure the take their time in balancing the axel and to make sure there arent any harmonics in the axel to create any further problems. Make these Requests!!
On another note for all you Limited Drivers out there, there is also a campaign to upgrade the Nav software at no charge. The problem with my Nav was it had me drive around in circles on some addresses. Be sure to have your Vin# on hand for both of these issues above. This should also apply to the Lexus Dudes as well.

I always ask them to grease the driveline during the oil/filter change but most of the time they don't do it and if they do they often claim they can only find a couple of zerts to grease. So maybe it's a good thing that the techs are incompetent??? I have 24K miles and mine clunks about every 1500-2000 miles when I brake hard.

Now, if any of us are engineers or scientists that can develop a better alloy, or design...then I suggest it should be done and sold to Toyota...the next #1 car company in the world.

I have an 05 with about 7k miles. Haven't heard or felt any of these clunks or thuds ... yet! How many miles have people run before all this started? I'm hoping against hope that I'm not going to be hearing and feeling this noise....
Is is possible they changed something on the 05's driveline to address the problem? Probably not but you never know........

If you wanna get this fixed, call the 800 toyota number for customer service. Let the rep know you have heard about this from other owners and request for a new drive line. Be sure to work with your local rep. Keep in mind the drive line in our 4runners are telescoping, thats where they're pack the grease in not at the universal joint.
