Drive shaft noise or U joint noise (LEXUS 4/06 TSB page 18) aka Driveshaft thump/bump

Does anyone know if the parts for the Lexus TSB are interchangable with our 4Runner? I assume they are, but can someone who works for a dealership confirm this?

The propellor shaft part number is 37110-60A40
The rear control arm kit is 04006-09160

Again, just trying to confirm (a) if these Lexus part numbers have a Toyota counterpart, and (b) if these Lexus parts will fit the 4Runner as intended to repair the problem. The Lexus forums seem to show great feedback from those GX470 owners who have done the TSB... no more clunk for them.

Simply amazing that Lexus owners are being taken care of while us Toyota owners are getting the run around. Guess there are to many 4Runner for Toyota to want to properly fix the problem. I can't see why there would be any difference in the parts used for Lexus fix.............

OK. I got mine back 2 weeks ago yesterday. They removed shaft and lubed it. Now it's doing it again. I guess I'm gonna have to go in and see what bullshit story the service manager can come up with.

Claydoctor, see if you can get your dealer to get the control arms and new driveshaft for you... I have a bunch of postings printed from this forum and the Lexus forums so I can bring them with me when I try at my local dealership.

Thanks to T4Runner06, I've uploaded a scan of my service write-up. Hope this will help all you guys who are having the problem. I know how terrible it is (suffered 3.5 yrs with it in my GX) and hope you guys dont have to live with it as long as I had to live with it.

Here it is. It's kinda small, but hope it helps!

Complete aggravation...

You know.... I had a 2003 LTD V8 that ran like a beauty... I traded it in for a 2006 that is just a complete let down. The "clunk" that everyone is describing is very aggravating. I have taken my truck to Toyota 3 times and they tell me it is normal! They explain it by saying that the rear diff is simply "locking" into place. The same feeling as if you put the car in park and then there is a "lag" before it locks into place. In addition, my vehicle also lets out a large JOLT when the A/C compressor cycles... You can see it as the RPM go from 1800 to 1500 and the car jumps. They also told me that this is normal!! Hmm... so why do we spend the money on these vehicles when my cousin's 1998 Dodge runs smoother????? Has anyone else had the "A/C" problem as well. In addition, has anyone made any headway on the rear clunk... issue!!! Please let me know!

You guys could have just bought the 2WD models... They don't make the clunk :-)

Unfortunately with 2 ft of snow the 2WD doesn't cut it around this part of the country. What I will be buying however is anything but another Toyota unless they make this right........ ;):

Just filed a complaint with Toyota

Ok... so here is what I am thinking. Apparently enough of us are having a legitimate problem with the truck so I called Toyota and filed a complaint. In the complaint, I mentioned the previous complaint that was filed and that person's case number. So, I think that we all need to follow "the procedure" and file complaints to make sure that Toyota is aware THAT WE ARE AWARE of the problem ... and that other people are indeed having this issue!!

My case number is as follows:

Case # 200608170080

I think it would be a good idea for as many of us as possible to file complaints and reference these case numbers so that Toyota is not able to simply shrug us off. The phone number for Toyota is 1-800-331-4331.

Buy the Lexus; they'll apparently make it right, then... :D

Well, bitching about it on the forum here won't do much... You just need to encourage everybody with the problem to make it a PAIN for Toyota so that they'll want to do something about it. If everybody started filling up the service departments with these problems and started tying up the helpdesk with complaints, I'm sure it would get their attention. But you guys need to bug the heck out of them if you want something done about it.

have you guys tried other dealerships?? :awais: Maybe one's a real pain in the a$$ but maybe others are more caring and concerned. If only there was another Lexus dealership in town, I would have gone to them and tried fixing the things that my current dealer couldnt fix at first. :bash:

The forum is exactly the right place to voice problems! It's exactly why everyone with this problem knows what is going on with Toyota. I've been bugging them quite a lot but I have other things to do like a job, etc.... :D This shouldn't even be an issue because Toyota is well aware of the problem. Why did they issue a TSB for Lexus if it wasn't a problem. Hell, they have a whole new part to fix the problem so who's kidding whom? Dealers simply spew the Toyota party line.. What can the dealers do but talk with the factory? The factory tells them to stonewall it. One thing for sure it's not over just yet...

Well, it depends how important it is to you. Take a day or two off work and bug every Toyota dealership's service department within a 50 mile radius of you and see if any of them will fight the battle for you. You guys have spent enough time turning this into one of the longest threads on this entire site but it hasn't done any good, so doesn't this tell you that you need to get more agressive with Toyota instead of just venting here? It's not doing any good.

And how do you KNOW that the Lexus fix will completely solve the problem on a 4Runner?? Do you know 100% for sure that the parts will bolt up? Why doesn't somebody with enough money just go order the parts from Lexus, put them on their 4Runner, and see if the problem goes away? If it does, then it will give you guys a LOT more ammunition, IMHO.

Just my $.02. You guys need to attack this from another angle. Has anybody had an attorney draft up a little letter and send it to Toyota? I think you might get a little more than just a form letter response if there was the threat of a class action lawsuit on their hands.

Anyone want to volunteer to take their 4R into a Lexus dealer and *pay* them to install the clunk fix? Any idea of how much this would cost? If it's not too steep it might be easier than harrassing Toyota. Time is money, after all.

I seriously doubt you could even get a Lexus dealer to install the new part. Even if you could get them to do it this is not an inexpensive fix as I understand it. Why shouldn't Toyota fix the problem if they recognize it's a very annoying problem with the Lexus? My dealer is certainly getting sick of me bitching about the problem to them. They don't deny the problem but don't have any input from the factory. I paid around 40 grand for my Runner so why the hell should I have to pay more money to have something fixed that shouldn't be there. Eventually the Lexus TSB is going to come back to haunt Toyota because they are admitting it's a problem.............

In a way it's sort of a win-win situation re: "our greater common goal of a clunk fix" if someone takes their 4R into a Lexus dealer to pay them for the fix. If the dealer goes along with it and it works, then it's more ammunition to throw in Toyota's face. If Lexus outright refuses to do it for money, then the angle to take with Toyota is "look you won't allow us to fix our 4R!! You know what the fix is, and Lexus isn't allowed to do it for us even if we paid them!!"

Of course someone has to be willing to lay down the cash. I'm wondering how much it would run. Anyone?

I talked to my neighbor that works for Toyota and that drives a 06 SR5 V6 4x4 as his company vehicle. He said he doesn't have the clunk and he has 22k on his. He said he will talk to the local service manager here to see if they have had any reports like this. I told him about the Lexus TSB and he said they do share the same chassis and drivetrain but some parts many or may not be different. He also said the whole different division thing is more political that anything. He is going to look into the problem and get back to me. He is a no BS type guy and he said he will at least be able to get good information compared to me taking the vehicle in. I also have a friend that works at a Lexus dealership and she is going to check on the prices of the parts.
