Driving etiquette:

So today I was waiting to make a left hand turn into the carwash and was stopped in the medium of a 4 line road, 2 lanes going North and 2 going South. While I was waiting for the traffic to clear a guy in an F350 dually stop in the left lane to allow me to make the turn. When he stopped there were 3 or 4 cars behind him and because his truck was so big along with the cars behind him there was no way I could see if any cars were coming in the right lane. So instead of attempting to make my left turn and either blocking traffic or possibly getting hit by an oncoming car that I can’t see, I waved the guy on and waited till the traffic cleared to make my turn. All of 30 second mind you. Needless to say once I got into the carwash the guy that was behind me who was also waiting to make a left turn felt the need to point out what a F-ing idiot I was and that my driving was going to cause an accident. It was kind of funny though, first the guy gets out of his car and walks by the bay that I pulled into and looked to see who was driving and once he saw that I was only a 5’5” guy, he figured it was safe for him to grow some balls and tell me off. I find it very interesting how guys will judge another guy solely by his height. I know this guy thought he was Mr. tough guy cause he actually told me to shut my mouth “little man”. God are people dumb. Little did this joker know, but I push 265 on the bench and would have introduced him to my friend “Buck” which was in my pocket. But this is neither here nor there.

So this got me thinking about driving etiquette. Now I appreciate the jester by the guy in the F350 I actually think this is bad etiquette to stop in the left lane and allow someone to make a left turn over a multilane road. You see this all the time. Car in left stops to let someone turn left. No one in the right lane knows a car is turning left so they keep driving at full speed. Car making the left turn pulls out and is now blocking the left lane waiting for the traffic in the right lane to clear. People behind the car who stopped are now honking at the car that stopped to let the car turn. When you are in traffic on a multilane road stopping to let someone turn just seems like bad etiquette to me.

Just wondering what others have to say about this.

You must be a fairly experienced driver. A lot of people fall for the guy who waves them through and then get nailed by the car in the outsdie lane. And of course you would have been at fault for "failure to yield right of way." The guy who called you out is an ignorant fool. I'm not sure it's a great idea to introduce your knife into the discussion though. You escalate the anger that way. Funny, I go to a busy car wash with a similar road out front. I have trouble getting out becasue I have to take a left from a stop sign. Several times I've taken a right and gone around to a light rather than try to turn across three lanes of traffic.

i think you did the right thing. the 350 was holding up a few cars as you were holding up 2 including yourself. and you prevented an accident. better safe than sorry. i would have done the same thing.

and that guy was just a douche. he was probably angry at something else and needed to scream at someone, and felt you were a good target. i wouldnt take it personal. 90% of the people on the road are ****s. you did the right thing by keeping the problem solver in the pocket. no need to go to jail for watching out for your safety. ha.

I agree with all of you. The F350 was just trying to be "nice" but that often screws up traffic more. If you have the right of way, keep it. When the oncoming traffic cleared you would have turned. The F350, by stopping in the middle of traffic, now caused traffic behind him to have to stop when there was no need to. The traffic behind you could go around you. Mr. impatient behind you: how did he know you weren't some gang banger or a psycho with a gun waiting to pop a cap in his ass???

u shoulda got ur "lil guy" ass outta the car and punched him in the mouth, and when he was on the ground like a lil girl u shoulda slapped a T4R sticker on his forehead and made him wash your runner. :) but as u stated thats neither here nor there,

Driving Ettiquette

As someone who drives large trucks (both 18-wheelers and heavy straight trucks), I can honestly say that driving ettiquette and the overall skill level of the average motorist have taken a nose-dive in the past 20 years or so.

Trying to "do the right thing" or be considerate of others is almost passe' and can often be dangerous nowadays. From lack of understanding how merging traffic works (or is supposed to work) to deliberate failure to use turn signals and poor lane discipline, the average US driver simply sucks. I have driven in many states and find that the Eastern seaboard contains the worst drivers - bar none.

We hear about "road rage" incidents on TV, but seldom do they want to address the root causes of it. A hand gesture or flash of the high beams is probably the extent of what you might want to do to another driver. First of all, you don't know who might call the law on you and 'exaggerate' your behavior. Second, you just don't know who might be "on the edge" with other matters (job loss, divorce, cheating spouse, money problems, etc.) or if they might be carrying a weapon of some sort.

People piss me off to no end when I am driving and I secretly wish for a bumper-mounted rocket launcher or a device that could flip someone into the median strip; but I am okay once I get around them and have never had the urge to follow someone home or into a parking lot just to correct their habits. It ain't worth it! Out of sight and out of mind, I say.

You are spot on. Experience is a great teacher and when I was much, much younger I fell for the “driver who waved me though” and was hit by a car. It was on a 2 lane road and the guy who waved me out was turn right onto the road that I was waiting on to make a left turn so he stopped and waved. I checked the traffic in the opposite direction figuring that the traffic behind the guy who stopped was also stopped. As soon as I pulled out a guy from behind the stopped car tried to go around the stopped car and smashed the front of my car. Who’s fault. Mine “failure to yield to oncoming traffic”. You only make that mistake once.

LOL. Boy did I want to. In my younger days I would have put this guy in the hospital. But age and a family will mellow you out. These days I keep a pretty cool head and blow these things off. But if the other idiot wants to make a move at me, then it’s on.

I can’t agree with you more. If you have the right of way keep it. I hate when people with the right of way decided to yield it because this usually causes more traffic problems then it solves. If you have the right of way people around you aren’t expecting you to all of a sudden stop for someone else. It’s just a bad idea.

I deliver pizza as a second job, and see stuff like this all the time. It drives me nuts, I'm a very considerate and safe driver. Have a CDL and have driven heavy straight trucks for a few years and know what I'm doing. But merging traffic in Utah just doesn't seem to happen. I watched two people yesterday slam on their brakes in the middle of the right lane to make a right turn they almost missed. Nearly got hit by a guy going 15 under the speed limit, talking on a cell phone. Didn't even bother to use his signal when he tried to change lanes into me. You were totally in the right and that guy shouldn't have stopped for you.

Glad it all worked out

I am glad it all worked itself out. I am not sure what state you were in, but if you had introduced Buck, Sig or Glock might have introduced each other. It good to see level-headed thinking.

Stay Safe!

If the F350 was sitting in traffic and left room for you to turn (instead of blocking you or moving a few spaces up), I think that was right of him. I have this happen sometimes when I'm in the Tundra or Sierra that's very big. I try to help the person turning in front of me though, at least. And I don't stop if it's going to hold up people behind me, especially if the light is green and whatnot.
