dual battery set up

I have been thinking about this and I am asking cause I genuinely don't know.

Why don't you have the second battery in the cargo area? What the advantage of having it in the engine bay?

There are a lot of good reasons not to put the second battery in the cargo area. Wiring is a headache, and the batteries take a lot of room out of the cargo area.

I just got my dual battery system installed. I could never have done this work myself. I had Mule Expedition Outfitters do the work for me. Here is the list of stuff they put in...

Custom battery tray made by Mule Expedition Outfitters.
2 brand new Odyssey Deep Cycle Dual Purpose Batteries.
Blue Sea Charging Relay System.
Victron Dual Battery Monitor

The mechanics had one hell of a time fitting everything in, but like the OP they were able to after moving the coolant overfill bottle and fuse box.

Is there a wiring diagram out there to help with this type of setup? I know I could google it but was wondering if someone here put one together.

Btw Mule Exp. Outfitters is awesome! When I was in Seattle they always had great service, knowledgable, and friendly.

I did some research before I decided I did not want to wire this thing myself, and you are right, google will guide you to all the info you need. I really liked the specs on the Blue Sea automatic charging relay unit that I got, and you can get a basic idea of the wiring from their directions if you go with their system or even another relay switch.

You can see from the picture how it is wired too. In the picture, that extra big red wire on the starting battery is to my winch.

I did this mod too...

Sweet! So, that added fuse box is on a hinge, and it sits low enough to close the hood....

It sure is

What kind of a fuse box is that, and where did you get it?

I got it off amazon, can't remember the brand tho

What kind of a hinge bracket did you use?

I made the hinge bracket

From 12/15: Just finished my dual battery set up. After reading a several random threads about it I decided to do it. First I moved the "charcoal" box and fuse box back about an inch or two toward the firewall utilizing other bolt holes and some creative mounting. Then I removed old battery tray, cut the original battery tie down and old fuse box mount ears off of the fender, and then beat the fender that was under the fuse box flatter. Then I added an eyebolt setup through the fender to replace the battery tie down ear, cut a 1x1x12 inch chunk out of the radiator plastic cover next to the battery location, replaced old tray with a marine dual battery tray, modded the old battery strap with some muffler hanger rubber strap to fit, added an 80 amp isolator just below the fuse box mounted to the fender, ran the 100 amp fused wires to split all my add-on (stereo, amps, inverter, lights, ect) accessories to one side and the rest of the truck to the other. All works great. Waiting for a dual battery switch that fits the dash panel to get here, then I will add a couple more wires to the system so it can self jumpstart from one to the other in emergency. Pretty stoked with the finished product. >1/17/16 edit< I did this at a cost of about $250, includes the cost of 1 new Advance Auto Gold Series battery. This is the identical battery as what I already had so I decided to go with the same option. Also, I am sure it may help that I have a GM CS-144 120 amp alternator installed in my truck vs the stock 70-80 amp unit. I have now added a dash switch that links the batteries for jump starting only. I too googled wiring options as there are many based on how and what your necessities for the system will be. I have had no issues to date, and I feel better about never having a dead battery failure.

What I'm trying to understand is. If you winch a lot. Do you make it so the winch uses both batteries ? Or only on the spare battery ?

The IBS has a good description page. It has a button you press which links the two batteries for half an hour, or 3 hours if you press it twice, just for winching.

I am a little embarassed to post my new setup with these clean installs, but here's mine (done yesterday).

I bought a 55Ah Dual Purpose Marine battery from Walmart ($85 OTD, including core charge for not bringing in an old battery). The 150 Amp isolator was $75 from powerstream.com .

I was actually able to move the fuse box quite a ways. As you can see, I able to keep the factory coolant bottle location. And, I actually had the fuse box moved probably another 1.5" further, but relaxed it some to minimize tension on the wiring harness.

The ratchet strap is my "temporary" retention solution.

Thanks for the great idea!

I dont see why not!

However, putting it up front better balances the weight for heavy loads (also a priority for me because my front springs are way too heavy), and makes use of extra engine bay space that otherwise has no functional value.
