Dual Battery Tray Options

There was a group buy on the IBS recently at Sierra Expeditions via Expedition Portal.
 
Talked to BB last week and he said he had one made. It should be available in a few weeks. He was going to email me a pic last Friday of it, but...... nothing yet......:welcome:

Machined out of 6061 T6. I am using a Odyssey PC1200, a few have asked why I didn't go with a larger batter. My answer is, because that "little" battery packs quite a punch and combined with my starting battery, offers waaaaaaaay more power than I would ever need. Plus, I still had to relocate the Power Steering fluid res., but I only had to move it over about an inch. My goal was to fit an aux. batt in that spot with as little disturbance to the OEM lines, parts, etc. as possible. That is a 100 amp breaker on the hold down and it is used in conjunction with an IBS DBS battery controller. Awesome system.
 
I made a new base for the power steering res. bracket that is a little beefier than the OEM on and bolts directly onto the tray I made. The bracket for the reservior attaches to the reservior with a nice dovetail and a retaining clip that lets you remove the res. without un bolting the bracket. I wanted to keep this aspect of the mount so I cut the dovetail section of the bracket off and welded my own, beefy, bent up steel base to it. Voila!

nice work! your tray looks like it'd be even more primo if you reversed them (driver's side becomes aux battery, passenger side is starting battery in your tray). then you could drop in a new deep-cycle in the big honkin' spot where the OEM sits currently.

SoCal - I like your setup a lot, but I'd like to go with a larger deep-cycle battery in the aux position. Also, that tray looks 'spensive!

Thanks. I may go with a larger deep cycle in the distant future, say, if I ever end up doing a winch, but for now the PC1200 is more than enough.

For price, the material was scrap and the machine time was, well, my own time. If I had to put a cost on the raw material, its maybe $40 or so in the 6061 T6 plate, a few bucks for the SS all-thread and SS Ny-locks, and maybe 10 mins in the CNC mill. Additional for the paint / powder coat. I spent more time on the damn powersteering res. bracket than the tray!!!

I don't know the respective sizes, would an optima fit or is it bigger?

pc1200 is a bad little dude, did you consider the pc1400 it looks like it will fit into that same hole ... may have to relocate those hoses.

Here are the specs in case anyone was wondering:

PC 1200 Specs:

1200 cranking amps for 5 seconds
1090 cranking amps for 10 seconds
900 cranking amps for 20 seconds
825 cranking amps for 30 seconds
Short circuit current over 2600A
44 amp hours
78 minute reserve capacity with 25amp load


The PC 1400 would be the only other battery I would consider and it is almost 1.75" longer than the PC1200 which would require moving the resevoir over that much more and also moving the A/C tube over and making a new bracket for that. It is possible, but I wanted to make the aux battery install as least invasive as possible. Right now it looks like the setup came from the factory, no lines are bent, tweaked, stresed, or relocated in places where they could be damaged.

As soooooon as I'm done with a couple little projects and have some free time I will post a thread guaging interest and see what happens, I need to figure out a better way to mount the PS res. For me it was no problem cause I just took it off, cut it up and re-welded it, but I want to find a way or modify my design to use the existing bracket. More design!
