Really? That's scary. I'm running dual Optima's (Red and Yellow), I'll keep my fingers crossed I guess.

I must have got lucky as my blue top has been holding up for 2 1/2 years now but I wouldn't buy another one with all the reports of quality issues since moving the manufacturing to Mexico. I only paid $100 for mine on craigslist though so I got my money's worth.Diehard Platinum or another Odyssey for me if this one croaks!

Odyssey doesn't make the Diehard Platinum's though or even their own batteries for that matter.EnerSysEnerSys Home the largest battery manufacture in the world, makes them for Odyssey and Sears's Diehard Platinums are supposedly made to the same standards as the Odysseys now. Both ,IMO are the best you can buy here in the states.Old EnerSys/Sears news release...News Release---

My mistake. I misunderstood what I had read before. Still, looks like DH Platinum is a great choice.
 
Replaced the Optima with a DH Platinum today after Optima wouldn't honor the warranty because I bought it through Amazon, and Amazon wouldn't allow me to return it because it's a "hazardous item". In the end, I probably would have done it anyway since Sears does a 4 year warranty and then pro-rates it after that.

IBS is telling me the voltage is good to go!

I'm trying to get it to charge off of the battery manager. Wouldn't charge while hooked into the IBS, so I'll leave it on the trickle charger for a few days and see what I get.

I've noticed my yellow top won't power the fridge for as long as it used to but haven't checked the IBS...my truck has been sitting a few days so I will check. Hopefully it isn't already time for a new battery although I got mine through Advanced Auto so maybe I'll have better luck taking it back?

I'm not an engineer....

BUT is it really a good idea to have your positive terminal rubbing up against the fender??

I test fit the same battery in the same tray both directions and chose to put it in the opposite way you did.

I also put the soft side of adhesive velcro on the fender to lessen rubbing, and also purchased military terminal covers to cover up the connections.

I have the negative of the aux battery near the fender with a negative cable for the dual battery routed to the negative of the main battery. I also have a short ground cable routed to a chassis ground on the other side of the air box.

If you get a chance, snap a completed photo. I'd like to know how you got the terminal away from the fender.

During test fitting I did not like how tight the battery was fitting in the tray or how the military terminals were touching the fender.

I elongated the tray mounting holes and crushed the air-con line bracket mount to push the battery as far to the drivers side away from the fender as possible.

I still ended up not using the military terminal connector and instead used the wing nut terminal.
 
I'll try to take a photo tonight. It's got about a half inch of clearance from the metal, and I used double sided tape plus part of a plastic jug to insulate. I didn't modify the tray - just pulled it as far as I could away from the side. I have been looking for military terminal boots for a while, but I can't seem to find them anywhere.
 
I believe I ordered the terminal covers from Remy Battery. Got the crimper there too. It worked better than I expected it when used in the vice.

I think I ordered my fancy split loom from Parts Express.
 
Very difficult to see since everything is white, but I used part of an egg nog jug and cut two 1" x 3" strips and 3M-taped them to the side of the engine bay/fender wall. With the strips in place it's about .25" clearance from the positive terminal to the plastic. I ordered terminal covers from Remy battery last night as well, so I feel fine about the setup. I've already taken it offroad on some pretty bad washout, and some good inclines/declines and the battery hasn't budged. The battery literally doesn't have any wiggle room since the battery housing is wedged right against the lip of the engine bay. I feel confident enough it's not going anywhere.

New member here from Vancouver Canada.

I have been looking into dual battery tray solutions for my new 2012 TE and recently contacted budbilt after reading this thread. It would seem that they have a product ready and only need someones rig to test fit it in. This person would receive the tray for free. I would do it except I am nowhere near their location.
I was hoping I could shore up some interest again on here and hopefully somebody is close to their shop and wants a free tray.

Here is the response I got from them.

Hello,

I understand you have a 5th gen 4runner battery tray in developement. Do you have any info on this unit and when it would be availble to purchase?

Response -

The battery tray will be available for purchase as soon as I can find someone to come in and let us use their vehicle for a test fit. We are offering a free battery tray to the person who will let us use their vehicle for test fit.

That does not make a lot of sense to me.... because I thought Bud owned a 5th gen that he built those bumpers on :crazy:
 
He built the original front and rear off of Gadgets truck, but used a silver TE when the design changed a little bit for the production models.

I thought MeBe4running was going to be meeting with him about test fitting it and something else, but I reckon I may be blowing smoke. If Bud was a little closer I'd swing in and let him use my truck.

I recall that the first one built was on gadget's truck, but when it was finally listed for sale on-line it was with the pictures of Bud's truck.

At least that is what the "Budbuilt" license plate and previous statements that he was going to get one led me to believe. Maybe he got rid of it, I don't know.
