Dumb but lucky

Just thought I'd share...Quite embaressing especially with all the crazy modding you guys do.

Was leaving work when I noticed the TPMS warning light on. Passenger rear tire was low. Figured no problem. I'll fill it across the street and then plug the tire at home. Duh. Gas station closed and was levelled about 3 months ago. Off to a bad start. Drove to the dealer and they filled it for me.

Got home. Told my wife I was going to patch the tire first and then eat dinner. Should take 10 -15 minutes. I was lazy and for some stupid reason I put wood blocks on my floor jack and jacked up at the axle. Never plugged All Terrains before but I figured it was like any other tire. Got all the tools, patch kit and sat on a comfortable chair and proceeded. Thought that if I worked fast I could plug it with minimal air loss and all would be good.

Epic fail. Screw was really stuck in there for starters. Had hard time just screwing it out. Then put the file in the tire and it got really stuck. Broke off the handle. Got all kinds of pliers and vice grips and proceeded to force that bastard out. Would not budge so I started letting the air out of the tire. Was almost flat and I was going ballistic on that file when it happened. Truck fell off of jack and tire landed right on my foot. Heart almost stopped until I realized that I was stuck but not injured. Tire kind of folded and outside lug got wedged and was holding rim from smashing my foot. Sat there for a few minutes in amazement.

Thought about yelling for my wife but I could hear home theater going in the house and knew she would not hear me. Plus she would freak out if she saw my foot under the tire. Worse part is I knew the neighbors would come out and although I would be rescued, I would be the talk of the neighborhood. It was plain freaky. I was totally stuck but in almost no pain at all. Thought to myself, I could sit here for hours.

Didn't even have my phone cause I thought this was a 10 minute thing. Finally decided that I would have to rescue myself. Wedged all my tools under the tire and around my foot to help support the truck in case I failed. Stuck the longest screwdriver I had within reach under the rim and gave it a mighty yank while pulling on my foot. Bam. Came out like a champ. No pain. No injury.

Moments later my wife came out to see when I was coming in to eat. Kind of told her what happened but it really didn't register (luckily). Had a really good story to tell at work.

And no. I do not have pictures (no evidence of my stupidity).

You are a lucky man, could have been a lot worse. Where was you jack stand? Floor jack should just be used for lifting/lowering.

Glad to hear you're okay and boy was luck on your side! Let me guess, slippers all the way? Shoot, I might have to wear my steel toes if I ever have to do that.

I don't know if you drink beer but this is the way I would tell it:
Proposed changes in bold type.

Got home. Drank a beer. Told my wife I was going to patch the tire first and then eat dinner. Drank a beer. Should take 10 -15 minutes. Drank a beer. I was lazy and for some stupid reason I put wood blocks on my floor jack and jacked up at the axle. Drank another beer. Never plugged All Terrains before but I figured it was like any other tire. Drank a beer. Got all the tools, patch kit and sat on a comfortable chair and proceeded. Drank a beer. Thought that if I worked fast I could plug it with minimal air loss and all would be good. Got up to get more beer.

Wow, you're VERY, VERY fortunate!! Glad you're okay.
Things like this happening remind us of how many chances we sometimes take (putting ourselves at risk), when trying to get things done in a hurry.

Once again...glad you're okay!

rig, best regards

I like your version better but I don't drink any more. Dumb enough without alcohol.

Wow, glad you are ok. The times I do a quick wheel dismount with a stand I still have bad thoughts in the back of my mind. The problem when doing something tht rocks the truck is that the jacks move A LOT on those castors...both at the wheels but also up at the contact point.

I had a jack fail while working on my M3 once and fortunately I had stands in place...but not fully supporting the car. Even the small one inch drop from jack to stand scared me (I feel like stands aren't designed to received impact shock like that) enough to spend a shit ton on AC Hydraulic's stands that have a notch and pin design over the common toothed stands.

Thanks for sharing, it's a good reminder to use jack stands and be more careful. I have done a few things using a jack only thinking I would be careful and got away with it.

Scarey! Are you spying on me? I was using a cheap ass Walmart kit. I feel even dumber. For $20 I would have to be a complete idiot for not getting one. Placing my order immediately. Thanks for the advice.

I was not spying on you. I have broken to many of those plastic ones before I realized that these were made. They even come with spare ends and allen wrenches if you break one. The steel handle should never break.

You earned it!

I'd go find the nearest casino because it's your lucky day.

I like your idea except for Hawaii and maybe Utah are the only states with absolutely no legal gambling. I think the lawmakers don't trust dumb people like me to gamble responsibly.

To all of you out there:

Thanks for the kind thoughts and support!
