dumbfounded. Crazy unsafe shimmy over 60. not tie rods, lbj, rack,.....help!!!

I remember a thread about a similar problem but I'm not sure if it is the same shimmy you have. Cant remember what its called (slip joint?) but it was made to collapse under impact and prevent engine from entering cab (I think) so its a safety feature but the op of that thread welded it so it was one solid piece. He said the shimmy was more dangerous.....

today the freshened control arms went in, i cant tell if it is fixed, it seemed alot better, biut the alignment is so far out it drives terribly, new front axles going in when they arrive and then going for alignment.

then, if needed. tundra brake upgrade, new rotors, ill remove the driveshaft and drive in 4x4 to see if it is all this time coming from the rear. i have never had a bad wheel bearing that didnt make SOME noise, or knock or get the hub hotter than others.

am I the only one who feels like designers at toyota are probably F----ing retarded? its like they presume no one will ever need to remove things ever for any reason. remove the steering rack to drop the damn control arms?!?!? thats a joke, i can re do entire front end on bmw in under 2 hours. thats EVERYTHING up there.......maybe im just frustrated, but rubber wears out, toyota ought to recognize this and make these parts readily serviceable.

ive driven in a car with bad u-joint in driveshaft too, the sensation was dramatically different than this, doesn't mean it cant be driveshaft tho.

A clunk from the rear driveshaft would make me suspect an excessively worn, or insufficiently lubed slip-joint. From front-to-rear you have three zerk fittings in the double cardan joint, then one for the slip-joint, then finally the rear u-joint. Five zerk fittings total, in the rear driveshaft.

*facepalm* Good point. Although I can say my plan was to not only have them find what was wrong, but also grease everything from front to back. Buddy of mine is a mechanic and gets off on working on vehicles like I do on computers.

Er, let me rephrase that... :biggrin1:

I get off to interweb porn too, its ok...

so, new upper and lower control arm bushings, diff drop, diff fluid change, new front axles.

Still shakes.

However, i think most 3rd gen owners with a mild lift will be excited to know that the same firestone that could not get ANY caster on the vehicle since lift was able to get 2.5 degrees on both sides now with new bushings.

This has made the vehicle feel much "safer" but the battle goes on as the car is clearly only gotten better at controlling the shake. but I went 90 yesterday on highway with some confidence, I never would have gone that fast in this car before (i dont drive slow, bmw hits 100mph daily) and i cant say I would be confident on roads that werent glass smooth, but it was a very slight turning point.

So, now the rotors are going out for a machine/checkup
'
the passenger rear axle shaft is coming out and going into a machine shop for checkup.

and the rear driveshaft is coming off so I can drive it in front drive mode for a bit to see how she fairs.

ps. this sucks

swapped out my passenger side rear half shaft, car was immediately tons better. at that point it rode like a 4runner with unbalanced tires. drove to a buddies house and threw his bone stock wheel and tire setup. car was butter at all speeds.

it is already a million times better. I never would have looked at the back the way this felt, the shake was coming through the steering wheel in a big way. it is so much better than before.

hhhmmm, what do I win?

Rear half shaft as in drive shaft?

Details please...this is driving me nuts. LOL

That's weird, it makes me wanna look into mine. I just did all diff fluids and it killed alot of the vibrations I've been seeing, but its still there intermittently.

This could be your pinion getting sloppy -probably not though, I'd bet drive shaft/drive line is wore out. Try greasing it to see if that lessens the issues.

I'd venture to guess that if a pinion bearing is that worn, the seal would be pissing fluid all over the place.

I just went out and did it this morning, and it did help get rid of more vibrating after driving around a bit. I did notice my driveshaft feels like it has some slack in the u joints that allows me to wiggle the driveshaft maybe as much as 1/8 inch. Also I was able to kinda bench press my driveshaft and my transfer case had an awful lot of movement around the mount, how do you know when those things are bad? I don't think I should have that much movement down there on anything.

Thanks, its already driving so much smoother but I will get around to them. Its really is peace of mind just knowing what the issue is.
