E-Locker and Differential Breather install, Trail Edition

Thats from ARB , Not Toyota ! they're telling you that to cover themselves because their systems are known to leak and pressurize the housing. I'm very familiar with ARB and there shortfalls. In regards to the factory breather without the ARB it is completely safe and absolutely unnecessary to modify and air is not drawn through the axle seals in a stock type application period . Like many have said the factory style breather has been a Toyota trademark for 50+ years and Toyota has the best reputation because it works perfect!
That's why we buy toyota in the first place.

I respectfully disagree , if you take one apart you will see the very light weight spring and once dirt/dust gets stuck in there they are so weak they will not operate anymore , when an axle heats up it will release air , when it is cooled quickly it will want to suck in air (ie cold water river crossing etc..) this valve will not let air pressure in ( if still working correctly witch is rare unless bran new )
Therefore water may be pulled in through the pinion or axle ends .

IMO the best thing to do is extend line and add a filter that allows pressures to move in both directions.

it is the first mod I do to all my new Toyotas I buy.

When I get to this mod I will be getting the arb kit. Not worried about cost. Glad to see all the info in this thread and other threads that are linked. Never did this on my Tacoma I had since it was a prerunner but now that I own a TE I want to do everything right and protected.

I'm glad to see so many replies to this thread. There are as many opinions on this mod as there are people. The mod I performed here will work much better than the stock OEM breather directly on top of the axle.

If I were to do this mod again I'd use the filter I linked above, which I found in other threads on this subject, or the ARB filter. I'd run the tube under the vehicle to the engine compartment and find a way to cover the filter from dust intrusion without enclosing it so it couldn't breathe. I'd put a shell over it to keep the dust off. That shell could be as simple as a metal can or plastic container that fits close with the opening aimed down and installed over the filter.

I can't tell what the ARB filter consists of. I can't even tell how big it is? There isn't much info on it in the Amazon ad. I do think it is a complete package.

There's another filter that I found reading the other threads on this subject. I believe it's linked in my OP above. It looked like a better filter with more surface area. But it appears to be open to dust infiltration. That's why I'd put a simple cover over it.

In my mod shown here I opted for the least expensive two-way breather part from Toyota, locating it above any possible water line the car could drive through and survive.

Found some more accurate info on arb.USA. the kit comes with its own filter assembly. I'm going to run the two lines separately and not use a t-valve to connect the two. Is it safe for the two breathers to be tied into one? Haven't done much research on the fluids in rear but is it OK for this to mix? I may be over thinking it a little.

I have searched but no luck in finding the extra tubing without buying the whole kit, but I have not contacted ARB directly. I think the best/least expensive option other then calling them and seeing if they sell just the tubing is to use the 1/4 inch fuel tubing most others have used and clamp it to the ARB tubing between the connections using a clamp, and just use the ARB tubing to connect to the filter and breather 1/8" ports. If I find any other info on the tubing or getting more of it I will post the info.

It will definitely be cheaper, just depends if you want all the same system plug & play or save $30 and retrofit the tubing.

It should, but I'm not positive. Probably worth a try, get a small sample of tubing and see how it fits. If it does you're golden, if not you probably only wasted a $1 or 2.

From an install video arb did and was in one of the threads for this mod, made it seem like once the tube is in the fitting, it isn't coming back out? I could be wrong but I'll start to do some digging and see what I can find out
Update: did a quick search and couldn't really find my answer, so I'll give a call to arb sometime tomorrow. This will be the first official mod on my runner

"you can pull it out any time: just push in the collet and pull out the tubing. it's a John Guest fitting."

Maybe he can chime in as he seems to be very knowledgeable and gives some great info in his posts.

yes, you can remove the ARB tubing from the fitting any time. Google "John Guest fitting" for reference; common in plumbing, easy to use.

fwiw: there was enough ARB tubing for me to do 2 separate runs from the rear to the engine compartment.

also, i didn't know this at the time, but evidently the ARB fittings match the threads on the diff housing, so you don't need to buy the OEM Toyota union referenced in multiple write-ups. i used the Toyota Union, but apparently you don't necessarily have to.
