Eaton E-Locker in 5th Gen

9/2016: Initial install. Unit ran great for a year until the locker started leaking internally.

11/2017: Bench tested, installer found it was the internal seal. He replaced it. No charge.

4/2018: Locker starts leaking again. ARB gave me a new locker (along with the same design piston seal). No charge. Also, one of my rear wheel bearings went bad as oil contaminated it. This was due to all that air pressure leaking into the axle. The pressure pushed my axle seal outward letting diff oil escape into the bearing and e-brake housing. $900 out-of-pocket-fix.

7/2018: Locker starts leaking again. Took in for a new seal, supposedly the "upgraded" seal. Instead of taking it back to the original installer (90 mins away) I went to a nearby shop who replaced the seal, paid $600 for convenience. Smh at myself...

Today: I get intermittent compressor cycles now and then on the trail, more than I'd like but at least the air isn't getting coming out the axle breather like all the previous times.

The issue has always been the bonded piston seal, not the seal housing (o-rings), not the bulkhead, copper line, airline, or compressor. Tested all the other variables. Don't know if this seal is going to last but so far its been a little over 2 years. From all the raving reviews on various forums I was hoping the ARB would be services once every 10 years but that is not my case.

Interesting, thanks detailing that out. How often and, on average, how long would you say you use your locker when on a trail?

Yikes, given all these issues I hear about ARB air lockers i cant imagine why someone would use them. For anyone who is interested these are the official Eaton part #s

Might be because for every five-ten complaints you read on an Internet forum there are hundreds or thousands running without issue. Same with the Eatons.

The pressurized my axle was my issue with ARB ... it is why I choose the harrop... I can deal with a little wheel travel before locking just like the Toyota OEM rear.

I feel for you brudda...

Do you have a photo of the Eaton locker switch? I'm getting conflicting info on whether they updated their switch to a toggle-rocker style switch. Asking because I would like to utilize the current switch slot where my ARB switch is, instead of fitting/cutting a new slot for the Eaton switch.

I used a different switch for it...

I used the switch from AOB instead but I've been deleting alot of my oem style switches and moving them to the switch pro

Very nice Xtremluck. I haven't seen another member or know of another individual who has the new 4 pinion Eaton rear in their 5th gen. ARB told me that they'll replace my BPS (again) with their most current design which shouldn't give me anymore internal leaks. I was ready to order the Eaton unit ARB contacted me back.

eaton e-locker

I also have an eaton e-locker in the front. Naturally like others, I purchased it and had it installed around when I did the 4.56 gears about 18 months ago. I activate it with my bantum spod. The wiring was super easy directly from locker to the spod.

I have really enjoyed having the eaton and used it on many occasions.

I completed the install of my Eaton rear locker over the weekend. Also had a chance to QA test it at the local off-road park. I now have tweaked front and rear bumpers and a slider that won’t let my door open but at least my locker works like a charm. A full DIY write up coming soon.

Eagerly anticipating the write up!

I'd be interested to hear on how eager it is to lock and unlock. That's the only thing I don't like about my factory elocker - usually when I need to use it I am on some steep hill already so the diff is under load and it won't lock or unlock. I usually just use my front air locker because it's faster, but I would prefer the simplicity and reliability of an elocker

It is probably very similar to the OEM e-locker. The mechanism needs some rotation to engage/disengage so it isn't instant like an ARB airlocker. Not a big deal for me since I usually use traction aids preemptively
