I guess I'm going to be the dumb chick here but could someone please explain to me what the "Eco" is? I have looked and looked and looked and can't find any info on it. Does it have any real effect on how the vehicle runs?

to the best of my limited knowledge at this time, i think if you turn the option off it will just not monitor how you are driving. with it on you get that green leaf, and depending on how your gauges are set up, it will show on a graph how economically you're driving. i don't think turning it off has any effect on vehicle performance, from what i've read at least.

Thanks, that's what I thought and from what limited info I could find online I couldn't really find anywhere that it said it effected the performance at all. Personally I think it's a pointless feature but oh well.

Only useless to you. I don't care about it much but other drivers notice it and ease up on the throttle to conserve fuel. My wife has a CR-V and her's puts a green glow around the instruments so she tries to keep it there if possible. She tells me it has changed her driving habits.

Agreed it's too bright - so I also disable it and use the other display that shows the ECO bar-meter instead.
My Pops has a 2009 Corolla, and it has the instantaneous and Average MPG indicators - I do wish ours had the dual MPG read-outs as well.
Regardless , as 1E hinted at, the ECO indicator and MPG indicator changed my driving habits for the better IMNSHO. I NEVER thought about MPG in my '99 Tacoma as it didn't have any sort of MPG reporting - and I always drove it with a heavy foot...

FWIW - The ECO "On/Off" ONLY controls the green light - it does not have any effect on fuel mapping/timing/shift points. Even if you have it "Off", You can still see the "state" of the Eco in a different screen on the Odometer display (shows you a bar-graph with "ECO" and then a bar outside "ECO" which is where the green light would also shut-off). Enabling or Disabling the light has no effect on performance.
And while I NEVER thought about fuel economy in my Taco - I do find myself thinking about it more and more since I have a real-time way to monitor it in the T4R - and have seen the MPG and $$$ benefits from "Playing the Eco Green Game" with myself. Kind of like Solitaire while you're driving

It does lower the shift points (which pisses me off at times). Eco will do its best to prevent you from running over 2k rpm (outside of hard acceleration).
When you turn Eco off it only turns the indicator light off, which is designed to keep you aware of your driving habits for better fuel efficacy.
The only way I have found to truely disable Eco, is to slap the shifter from D to S.

We represent a tiny portion of the normal owners. I understand the power of suggestion and how it could change habits just like the eco light. This is not the place to discuss this trait but everyone succumbs to it in some fashion. Beer, toothpaste, music and everything advertised is just like the eco light wrapped in a different package. Think before you post.
