electroCrunch - 2000 SR5 Build Thread

Congrats on the proposal! I like how it was low key and very private (that's how I did it too).

The truck is looking good with that rear swing out. Sedona is a beautiful place.

Thanks. That's my style too.

Agreed on all of that. I'll be going back for sure, maybe to try a more complicated trail (Broken Arrow?) and ideally a few night stay while we're up there. Maybe even camp instead of getting renting/booking a place. The surrounding Coconino NF is dispersed camping friendly.

Wow! Lots of congratulations are in order. Congrats on a successful proposal, and congrats on a successful outing after all your recent mods! That rig of yours looks great out on the trail.

I went out with a buddy to a nearby trail, Bulldog Canyon, to end the Thanksgiving 4 day weekend. I think this is his first 4x4. It's pretty much stock now, but of course he has plans to build it out. Those GXs are SO expensive to build, compared to our 3rd gens.

I didn't get a ton of action pics, mostly because I was busy wheeling and enjoying that time with my son. Here's what I did happen to stop and capture.

There's a lot of dust here in the southwest. I've found that compressed air does a really good job of cleaning out all of the dust from the many nooks and cranny's. Finally took some time to get the interior, chassis, and engine bay dusted out, after the Sedona trip and now this recent trip.

**Starting to do the research to get familiar with my upcoming steering rack replacement. I'll also be doing new front sway bar bushings while I'm in there (mine are deforming). Second to this, I have new SPC UCAs still waiting to go in. Will hopefully get to this project of rack and UCAs in the next few weekends... as long as I don't get invited to anymore holiday events.

This thread has been a great inspiration, just bought a stock 97 Limited and you have inspired/answered many of my questions. Thanks for sharing your journey.

The cbi hybrid rear looks great!
I have the same SR5 in millennium silver with the limited flares and have been going back and forth between the cbi hybrid with swingout and the 4x innovations plate with swingout.

Couple questions.
Are those FN wheels the standard -25mm offset or are the stacked with your spacers?
Would you buy the FN 5 star wheels again? Any complaints with them?
Are those still the 265/75/16s? For some reason they look larger

I only have experience with CBI. If I were to do it again I would take a better look at 4xI before deciding which to purchase. Something I've learned along the way, is that no matter who you go with there's bound to be a hiccup or two. It seems to just be the nature when working with these bumper fabricators.

Yes, the wheels are their standard -25mm offset five stars. I do not have any spacers on the vehicle. One of the reasons for getting the FNs was to get rid of the spacers.

I would absolutely buy the FNs again. No hesitation or complaints there whatsoever.

Yep, still the 265/75R16 tires. In some pics they look bigger than other pics. Same in real life too... sometimes the tire size looks fitting, and other times they look small. I think it depends on the angle and image, in regards to how they look size-wise.

Next set will be 285/75R16, but I have to plan a re-gear for that I think since I tow and really load it up when camping with the family.

I made it out to Hawaii for a week, last week. It was my first time visiting Kauai, which is now definitely my favorite Hawaiian island.

Couldn't help but take pictures of any modified 3rd gen I came across. I definitely saw more modified 3rd gens, but only captured 3.

That "Hawaiian style" lift is prevalent for Toyotas on the island

Headed out for an impromptu middle of the week adventure to the Four Peaks Wilderness area. I went out solo which was a lot of fun and definitely a different vibe than going out with someone else. I got rained on and hailed on while I was out there, which is a treat if you live in the desert.

I entered into the area via the Butcher Jones trailhead. These wild horses were there near the entrance.

Once I got past the trail head, I didn't see another vehicle for most of my adventure which was really nice.

I parked and ate lunch here while taking in the view and the sprinkle of rain.

Been a while since my last update. Too hot to go wheeling in the low desert right now.

My 4Runner let me down for the first time in the last 4.5 years and 45k miles. Well, kind of. I was still able to limp home through the neighborhood streets from the grocery store. I went to back out of the parking spot and found I had no brake boost after the first pump. Boost would take a few second to build back up, so I suspected a leaky/bad booster. After doing some research, I opted to just put a new booster in given there were no vacuum leak symptoms in the system.

I couldn't justify the approximate $900 Toyota part this time. So I went with a Napa remanufactured unit for much less. Budget woes.

New booster fixed it! This job was much easier than I anticipated. The most difficult part was ensuring I took care to remove the booster with the MC hard lines all still attached to the MC. I think if I would have cracked open those lines, the job would have gotten a LOT harder. To make it work, I removed all of the brake hard line connections at the firewall as well as the ABS unit, and that gave me enough room to pull the MC back while I wiggled the booster out. Probably a 2 hour job for me, and I take my sweet time.

Also - New battery too! Terminals/poles all cleaned and freshened up with a wire brush and dielectric great. I saw while I was working in there the battery was starting to spit some kind of junk out the top and a bit of usual corrosion on the positive terminal (my 2nd terminal now), and the charge it was holding was steadily dropping the last few times I noticed when charging it. So I ran to the big C store and got my free replacement days before the warranty expired. They aren't the best batteries, but they are the best warrantied batteries if you live in a hot climate that cooks car batteries in ~2 years.

*MAINTENANCE PERFORMED @ 215k miles. (to future self)

Sup OP? Next time youre in Sedona and want to 4x4 with a fellow 4Runner let me know! I have a 2000 sr5 4x4. Bone stock except 265 KO2s. Really dig your set up and am looking to do something very similar with mine.

Been a while since my last update. No major changes to the 4Runner. Still running strong, currently at about 218k miles.

I did do some maintenance over the weekend and today, getting it ready for another hot desert summer.

Oil, oil filter, coolant + water wetter, fuel system cleaner, air intake filter, spark plugs, and greased all driveshaft zerks. She still runs as good as the day I bought her.

What an engine. 218k miles on this thing and clean spark plugs, looking properly worn.

Found some trail pictures on my phone. I'm always driving, so I don't have any action shots to share.

First time, I know of, this 4Runner has ever seen snow. Took some family up to Sedona for the weekend, and got snowed in at the cabin we stayed at in Munds Park. 4Runner of course plowed through the snow like a champ. Only casualty from the freeze was a blown brake light, and the 4WD dash light didn't come on at first.

Later I took the brother-in-law out for some muddy wheeling in the four peaks area. Had a wet and cold winter. Again, the 4Runner plowed through the slippery trails without issue.

Last, I took the family out, again to the four peaks wilderness area, but this time with a mission: clean the trails as we went. We nearly filled the Trasharoo with trail trash.

Hello all. I took advantage of the long holiday weekend and installed a new steering rack plus a few other items. The 4Runner handles so much better. I should have replaced the rack a long time ago.

Rack: AAE 3273N
OEM Outer Tie Rods: 45047-39215 (L) & 45046-39335 (R)
Energy Suspension Rack Bushings: 8.10101G
Front sway bar bushings: 8.5141G FRONT SWAY BAR SET 26MM

eLVvsXZ.jpg

The job was a bit of a PITA, but I managed to tackle it by myself over a 2 day period taking my sweet time. I hope the rack lasts a while. It came with inner tie rods, we'll see how well those hold up. Will report back if the rack or inners have trouble.

I did press out the stock rubber bushings that came with the rack, and installed the ES poly bushings.

Steering is much more responsive and accurate than before, no constant pull, and bump steer seems reduced. Huge handling upgrade overall.

Rear suspension advice

Beautiful rig man! I recently purchased a 2000 limited 4runner and have been doing some research on the suspension that I should run.

Right now I'm set on having Kings for the front and rears. Total Chaos for my UCA. As for rear springs, I have been leaning towards Dobinsons for that. From looking on forums, I've seen people briefly talk about using LC coils for their rears and happened to stumble across your build thread. People stated they used Dobinsons 210V or 220V. I am curious if you were familiar with their brand. Other springs I have seen are OME.

What are your thoughts on these?
This one is the 210V
Dobinsons Front Coil Springs for Toyota Land Cruiser 80 series 1990-19 – Dobinsons Direct

This one below is the 220V
Dobinsons 0-110LBS Load Progressive Rate 2" Lift Front Coil Springs Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series 90-97 | C59-220V

I'm planning to order a swingout bumper from Nguyen Works as well which is why I am having trouble with the details of what specific rear springs I should run that will compliment the Kings rears and future additional weight that will be placed onto the bumper.

No news is good news.

Happy to report 4Runner is still running as strong as ever. Currently sitting at approximately 232k miles and she's still a looker.

I recently bought new 265/75R16 BFG KO2's (same size as before). I just really love this tire and I don't want to have to regear (would rather spend that money on other projects, see below). This tire size has done fine for me for over 40k miles so I figure I'd like to get another 40k with this size.

Back in April 2021 I did have a full timing belt and water pump job done. Other than that, it's just been regular oil changes. This thing just keeps running and running.

I've also added a trailer to the setup for camping. It's a work in progress, but it's been a major upgrade for making camping convenient for the whole family plus 3 dogs.

I don't have any current modification plans for the 4Runner, just trying to keep it in good condition while I continue to daily drive it.

The main reason I haven't been active on the 4Runner is my other hobby. I've been doing track days since 2014 in the Miata, but got very serious about it during covid and wrapped up a major Miata rebuild. 2022 has been my rookie season, competing in Time Attack with NASAAZ/UMS Tuning. I plan to move to NASA Time Trials for 2023 and continue competition with that program in addition to time attack. You can clearly see where my funds have gone :bounce:
