hmm. ok. when I was in the market for my 97 I went down to Washington to a few dealers and none of them were willing to sell me an elocker with the 4cyl, they told me you must get a v6 to get the elocker.

layball:
That only highlights the potential differences in how 4Runner's were ordered by Region or by individual Dealers.
I can tell you that 3rd gen 4Runner's with a 5-speed, and the E-locker were fairly common on Dealer lots in Utah. Due to the higher altitude, the more responsive V6 with the 5-speed, was a very popular and common combination. Most that I looked at also had the E-locker.
Due to the high altitude, the 4 cylinder 3rd gen's were not as popular. But they had a few for the budget conscious. The ones that had the 4 cylinder, 5-speed, and E-locker were usually billed as bargain wheelers.
One type of 4Runner that I never saw on the Utah lots back then, were 2wd 4Runners. Apparently whoever did the ordering for the Region, or individual Dealers, thought that a 2wd 4Runner wouldn't sell in that market. I would say that was a safe assumption.
It wasn't until this website was started, that it became clear that the manual transmissions and E-locker which had been so common in new 3rd gen 4Runners on Dealer lots in Utah, were apparently uncommon in most of the USA.
