Emergency gear/tools to keep in your T4R

After years of running a work truck out in the boonies, I've experienced a few "wish I had it with me" moments that have influenced what I carry at all times in my personal vehicles. Just thought I'd start a thread where all of us can share what kind of equipment we typically carry in our rigs - hopefully we can all get something out of the discussion and add something to our vehicle that we'd never thought of before that could end up saving us a hassle or saving our life!

I carry as a minimum:
-Medium-sized first aid kit (everyone should have one)
-Emergency reflective warning triangles (good for warning other traffic if your vehicle is disabled in an unsafe spot, like on a hill or curve)
-Tow strap and clevises
-quality bottle jack (way better than what comes with your vehicle)
-REAL tools for changing a tire (breaker bar and a proper socket)
-toilet paper (when you gotta go........)
-gloves
-coveralls
-rags
-knives...because handguns aren't kosher in Canada (Gerber folding knife, Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate, SOG Jungle Primitive Bowie/saw....yes, I'm a knife collector, haha)
-hatchet (SOG Tactical Tomahawk - also useful for the zombie hordes)
-basic tool kit
-several bottles of water
-matches, flint, fire piston
-SOG folding shovel
-ratchet straps
-flashlight and trouble light
-booster cables
-CB and a cellphone booster
-snacks
-20' of parachute cord
-basic OTC drugs - Advil, Claritin, Imodium (trust me)

In winter I add:
-winter coat/insulated bib coveralls
-my big Baffin boots (good to -60C)
-snow shovel
-sleeping bag
-toque
-mittens

When I'm out exploring in the boonies I add:
-40L of spare fuel
-full-sized spade
-axe
-couple cans of food
-bear spray
-change of clothes

Chime in with anything I may have missed!

I still think this a great thing to keep 'alive"..because this list can change per seasons, and also as the zombie threat level goes up and down...
 
Sh!t, I just became a victim of "this has been covered already"! I did a search and didn't find anything.....shoulda just kept going backwards in time with the threads, I suppose.

Guys, feel free to berate me mercilessly.
 
I'm woefully inadequate compared to the OP. I only carry jumper cables, tow strap and a medical kit at the moment but I do want to comment on his CB.

I'm beginning to believe it's our destiny for the 4Runner community to lead the charge in equipping our trucks with Ham Radios. A CB radio is only 4w while a good Ham radio is 50w generally. You're not going to reach out and touch anyone with a CB.

CB is definitely pretty pitiful for emergency comms. I pretty much just use mine for "friendly banter" when I'm out wheeling in groups, so we're all usually within a mile or two. I do, however, wheel in areas where commercial VHF is used quite a bit on oilfield and logging roads. It's tough to justify spending $1000 on a decent radio for a "just in case", so I chose to concentrate on supplying myself with the tools to self-rescue/survive in case of emergency.

You might want to add one of those portable jump start batteries that are rechargeable. We have one that has a built in air compressor and 12v dc plug.

Definitely good to have - to go along with that, MAKE SURE IT'S ALWAYS CHARGED!!:ybrick:

I carry these in mine all the time as well. I also have a Kabar Chopstick should the inevitable apocalypse come sooner than anticipated. :)

Love the SOG stuff though.

Agreed, SOG makes great stuff. I carry their Seal Pup knife in my work truck, and I've been using their Kilowatt electrician's knife pretty often at work for a couple years now, and it's holding up great.

The Chopstick looks great, but you need to get the Gerber Apocalypse Deterrence Kit - I picked one up at Wholesale Sports in Grande Prairie on sale last weekend. The Gator Machete Pro that comes in it seems very effective in dealing with hordes of walkers.

Make sure and test (biweekly or monthly) if it holds it's charge, even after charging like you're supposed to!!! I had one that died on me right when i needed to use it.
 
Bear spray? Theres something I never thought about roaming the streets of Chicago!! I'm gonna feel like such a jackass now if I run across one and don't have the spray!!

I've started to accumulate more and more stuff but nothing like a list you have. I'm on the road a lot for work going all over the place in AB and usually end up in the boonies. Normally I would carry:

- Recovery strap
- Booster cables
- Small first aid kit
- Full washer fluid
- D ring
- Avalanche shovel
- Extension cord

Last trip up, my oil light when on and had a major oil leak coming from my oil filter cartridge, gasket wasn't installed properly or it failed. Fortunately was only 10km outside of Whitecourt and bought some more oil. The ****ing thing took a full 4.4L to top up. Got to site 350km later, fortunately the boys had a socket set I could use and entire Peace River had one 4R filter I could steal the gaskets from. Nothing like doing a filter change in -20C. Put in another 4.4L of oil. Since then, I carry 3L of Toyota oil, an oil filter wrench, a 50 piece socket set that was on sale at crappy tire, some shop rags. A side note here, the NAPA 65mm oil filter wrench works better than the Assenmacher one I have at home - easier to take off after install.

This trip up was also interesting. Started passing a wide-load semi and the guy starts coming over into my lane and nearly side-swiped me. I started moving over a bit to the shoulder and slowing down hard once I realized what was happening but he ran me right off the road, and ended up in the snow bank, snow up to the top of the hood. Fortunately a guy with a dually came by, but I totally didn't realize how a D ring worked (I'm an idiot) so now I'm going to pick up a receiver shackle hitch.

Who knows what fun adventures will be on the next trip at this rate.
