Engine braking - Is it a computer-controlled function?

EDIT: It's supposed to say "braking" in the title. Couldn't change it for whatever reason. :doh:

Bear with me here as I've had my 4Runner for just a couple weeks now.

After reading the owner's manual from cover to cover, I remember a section regarding engine braking. Obviously a driver can select 4, 3, 2 and L when the conditions permit however I noticed that in certain situations the gearbox tends to downshift one or two gears all on its own. The situations have been downhill while using the brakes.

It is noticeable when this happens but is it normal and/ or computer controlled?

Normal and computer controlled. It's called grade logic. It operates in a similar fashion when ascending hills and holding lower gears longer.

Ah! That's it!

I will say that it picks some pretty unique times to do its thing.

Usually after you tap the brakes and later rather than sooner.

I'll pay closer attention to when it does it. I've tried to make it work but I think it knows and refuses.......kinda like my wife.

<turns around>

"Oh! Hi honey!!"
