Engine Rebuild/Supercharger/7th Injector/pulley/meth build questions

Kinda lengthly, any help and direction would be greatly appreciated!

Long time lurker mainly, and finally pulling the motor on my 98 5vz to rebuild and install the supercharger I've been sitting on for a few years. I have come across a ton of information but, I have a few questions. Been searching and have tried to call URD a few times this week and haven't been able to get anybody. Left a message for Gadget today though...

I have looked into cams, and haven't seen much info. Wanted to if they were reasonable price wise and if there would be much benefit in putting mild cams in during the rebuild. Going with the full rebuild kit from LC engineering, not sure how much over (if any) I'm going yet until I see what the cylinders look like. Any info on cams and if they are even recommended?

With the supercharger, the plan is the URD 7th injector kit with a smaller pulley and putting meth/water injection then dyno tuning it all when done. I would rather go with the 2.1 rather than the 2.2, but only if it is safe long term. I'm in Tennessee so the gas is decent, along with the 7th inj and meth kit what do you guys think? Side note, it has TRD headers and a Borla catback. I love the way it sounds, but know a highflow or decat is the way to go when going FI. Any experience with TRD headers and or how to open it up without it ruining it's glorious music?

Got 308k out of the motor this time, trying to go with good power/torque and long term reliability. It doesn't even need a full rebuild now, could just get buy with refreshing the top end... but that whole reason I have waited on installing the supercharger is because I was afraid with the higher mileage plus boost would grenade the thing. The aquamist HFS-3 looks like the way to go from what I've read...opinions on the 2.1 vs 2.2 and what water/meth kit?

Will the TRD clutch be good for that kind of power for daily use and some offloading/towing? Usually I just tow my open trailer with a couple dirtbikes. But the enclosed when doing occasional track days (stock and worn out motor really didn't like highway speeds in 5th with the bigger wheels/tires)

Lastly...with the rebuild, would you guys say the factory coils and injectors that have 300+k on them would need to be replaced when doing the rebuild. Aside from the LC rebuild kit, I plan on doing all new valve springs and guides (dont' remember if it comes with them) and depending on the condition of the head, all new valves.

:blah: I'll shut up for now

Regarding cams, word on the street is the 3VZFE DOHC cams are bigger than the 5VZFE cams (which would partly explain 190hp from the 3.0 liter 3VZ vs. our hp number out of 3.4 liters).

I've done some research and I've not been able to find any concrete information around proving or disproving the theory, however, next time I wander into the u-pull-it yard, I plan to snag a set and throw them in my rig.

Pretty sure I've heard this before as well.

Why exactly have you decided to rebuild the engine/heads?
LCE will regrind your cams for $1600, as I recall from their webpage. Not worth it unless your building a 1/4 miler. If your doing a full rebuild on the block, you may consider going with the 8.5:1 compression pistons as that will complement your supercharger. only $900...
As for pulleys, the factory one will provide more than you expect. but if you get your extra fuel sorted out with the 7th injector then you'll have no problem going to the 2.2". URD is pretty clear about the 2.1 pushing the efficiency limit of the blower itself(as in it will be generating so much heat the extra air will negated) and 2.0 requiring some sort of chemical intercooler. (coolingmist, devils own, aem and snow will have all the stuff you need for h2o/meth)
Personally I could never have sat on a trd charger, the 5vz block is amazingly stout, no reason you couldn't install one at 300k. (assuming basics like good compression and oil-tight)
A new set of balanced injectors are a good idea for a rebuild, but i'd just verify your coils are in spec before spending money on those.
Your exhaust will be tough, if you take the cat out it will be noticeably louder. but it will allow more cfm through the engine. what's the extra few ponies worth to you?
good luck man, post up your progress. :thumb3:
*note* I've read all the posts I can find about the 3vz cam swap but have yet to find a single person actually do it.. eh hem.. anyone?

Well, decided on the rebuild due to a few factors. Small ones being that the vehicle smokes on start up (valve stem seals) and before #3 stopped firing all together, there was quite a bit of rattling above 3k on that bank. I could prob get away with doing a top end refresh and re-ringing the pistons due to compression loss. But, the way I am results in me never being comfortable with throwing the SC with all the goodies on the original bottom end and other internal components. If I can't do it all the way right the first time, I don't want to do it. Hence why I've had a pretty black paperweight for almost 3 years now...what I paid for the SC was pretty ridiculous too :spy: Would it have been fine if I just did top end and threw the SC on, probably...I'm not willing to chance it though.

Either way I will be putting a water meth system (HFS-3?) and 7th injector kit. I knew URD's site stated that unless you were doing additional fueling and tuning the 2.2 was recommended. Since I am doing fueling, tuning, and water meth that's what I was trying to figure out. I guess my question is if the 2.1 is worth it when doing all that or just leave the 2.2 on there and be done. I know from what I've read the headers will drop the boost down a bit due to less back pressure as well...

The cams were just a curiosity, definitely not going for a drag runner. But, I have to agree with ya...looked and looked and looks like no one has done it. I'm just looking for more power and reliability long term. The cams looked fine the last time I had the valve covers off about 50k ago to replace the gaskets.

Other than going back with factory injectors, any that you guys would recommend? I know URD has higher cc injectors, but I would assume that higher cc injectors and the 7th injector kit would be fuel overkill.

shaun did the footwork to plug the AEM FIC 6 into a 5vz. he helped me get that setup together on my truck with a pnp harness from boomslang. Running this system is all too easy. tune real-time, no maf skewing, control meth injection etc.. not trying to sell you on it. but shaun might.. :eyebrows:
