Engine swap journey begins!

Nice work. The engine, visually at least, looks darn clean. So do the plugs.

I'd change the PCV also if it is still original.

Glad you didn't go the Blue Devil route.

Cleaned up the WP surface and reinstalled the 5 studs that all backed out. I cleaned them up and put them back in with some red loc tite so they don't come out anymore.

I'm going to swap the PCV over from my blown engine, it is less than 6 months old.

Found a receipt for the PCV valve in this engine but it looks like it was done in 2012. Might as well use mine since it's newer.

Also, got some FIPG, upper/lower radiator hose, exhaust seals (the 2 donut ones) and a new crank bolt in the mail today.

Still waiting on rear/front main seals and cam seals.

Anyone know the part number for the exhaust studs off the manifold?

Two stayed in tact but one snapped.

That's what I figured. I also cleaned up that exhuast manifold matting surface so the new exhuast seals sit flush. Didn't take a picture though.

Oh, and I retorqued all of the valve cover bolts (53 in/lbs) while I was at it. Even though it isn't leaking, ALL of them were loose.

New oil filter installed. I'll refill the engine with some fresh oil once its back in. I'll probably start taking apart my truck tomorrow. Still waiting on the cam/crank seals.

So this is where I'm at now. Got a ton of stuff pulled from truck today.

Still needs to be done:

Bell housing bolts
Flex plate bolts, inspection cover
Pull main harness through firewall
Motor mount bolts
Remove starter and move the wiring out of the way
Transmission electrical connections
ADD connector
Exhaust manifold bolts

Couple questions:

1. I want to order a new heater control valve. Mine looks brittle and the donor trucks broke. Is there a good after market one or does it have to be oem.

2. There is a brass double washer on the PS pump line. Can this be reused or do I need a new one?

3. Anyone know what this connector is for? My 99 donor engine has it but my 97 does not. It's right next to the AC pump connector.

That should be your power steering idle-up switch.

I think you'll find that your '99 and '97 ECU connections are different and you'll be swapping harnesses... (my '97 fed emissions parts truck and '99 CA emissions truck were most definitely different)

Someone else thought they were different. I currently have a 99 ECU in my 97 and everything has been working fine for about a year now. I swapped ECU's awhile ago because i was having tranny shifting issues and I thought it may have been the ECU. I still have the 99 ECU in my 97.

So does that mean that the 97 models didn't have a power steering idle up switch?

Now I know that doesn't mean the harness may be different, like this missing connector.

Would it be different inside the truck too?

Maybe he knows?

Thanks

Well, this sucks.

The "99" ecm that I've had in my 4runner most have actually been a 98 or something because it definitely was the same as my 97.

I grabbed my original 97 ECM and compared it with my donor trucks (99 ECM) and yup, they are totally different.

I guess this means I have to take off the harness from my blown motor and the donor motor and swap those too. Son of a B....

What's all involved with swapping the harnesses? Do I have to remove the intake manifolds?

I will say you will need to remove
The intake. IMO the harness is a complete unit. The O2 sensor plugs and the trans plus were the biggest pain in the arse.

You can just get a heater control valve from rockauto. I bought an aftermarket one and it’s holding up so far.

As for the power steering pressure hose washer, get a new one. It’s a crush washer so it’ll likely leak when you reuse it.

So I just remove the entire harness from each engine and swap them?

Are there any other details I'm forgetting?

When you say they were a PITA, do you mean just removing them? I know the transmission plugs are definitely a PITA to remove, been there done that.

When I had my swap done the mechanic told me that everything above the valve covers (plus the injectors) that was from my original engine would stay and whats below would be the donor engine swapped over. Presumably this was because my truck is a 97 and the donor is a 99-01.
