On a recent 5th gen, I would do the above on a warm engine, keep it running (don't stick your hand or tools in there!) and if the pressure washer (fan setting) nets a clean enough result, spray some trim dressing (I use 303 Aerospace), close the hood, and turn off the engine after 2 minutes post-water. If the engine stumbles, QUIT SPRAYING THAT AREA!
After 15-30 minutes, most of the water will have evaporated, and use a rag/tire wash mitt (dry) and mop up the puddles and make the black trim look nice with leftover dressing.
