Entune and text messages

Hey, after searching around for a solution, I decided to post a new thread. I am trying to find a way to be able to read message texts while rolling on the entune system.

Is there a way to hack/change/update the system to think that the vehicle is stopped, enabling the display of text messages?

I am well aware of the safety implications but my problem is due to the fact that text to speech doesn't work too well for me since I receive about half of my sms/emails in English and the other half in French.

If there is, I haven't heard of it, and I have looked extensively. I finally figured out how to get them to register on my head unit in general. Good luck though! Maybe someone figured it out. That doesn't even bother me too much (all my stuff is in English, so voice usually isn't an issue) but the whole "we're only going to let you scroll so far in this station list" thing drives me insane! Sometimes I have passengers too!

Anyway, rant over. :)

I can't get it to work at all (iPhone 6).

What can you not get to work? The Bluetooth? Or just the text messages? If it's just the text messages, try this (I had the same problem and this fixed it for me)

Go to:
Settings --> Bluetooth
Where it shows TOYOTA 4Runner (or whatever yours says) click on the i
Turn on the option for "Show Notifications"

Seems super simple, but that worked for me! Hope that helps.

And just FYI, that only allows my system to read new texts to me. I haven't figured out how to pull up a full list of all current messages. Haven't really tried, either. Hope that clears up any confusion.

It only reads new incoming texts as you said.

I don't remember if I saw it on these boards on somewhere else, but there was a guy selling a wiring harness/module you install behind the head unit that makes it think you are always stationary, therefor allowing you to use all the features of the Nav, phone, texts, and other apps that require you to be stopped. If I recall, the only downside was your position on the nav would be slightly off or not update as frequently or something.

That sounds interesting.

After search more I have fount a company that might be able to help. Prestigious Society

Some guys on the forum used it, but I can't be sure if it works on a 2015 Entune unit.

LOL - no worries! Glad that fixed it. It was driving me beyond insane. When I saw the answer (I had to dig deep - turns out a lot of people on the Apple forums are...how do I say it...not very nice) I was just thinking "no freaking way. It's not that easy".

Enjoy the beeping for incoming messages and also the lovely voice you get to hear reading some of them. My enjoyment comes mostly when friends have a group text going about something ridiculous. Ha!

Same.

It worked on my android phone, would pop up with a text and I could read it while stopped, or it would play it while driving..

Now on my Iphone, it doesn't do shit.

Did you try doing what HoustonTRD suggested?

My entune text to speach seems very fickle. I have turned on "show notifications" on my iphone 6. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it just shows Ignore. Sometimes nothing. It seems that for it to do anything I need to set messaging up everytime I turn on the vehicle. Anyone else have this problem?

Don't use that one. It's way expensive for what it is and bricked a couple members head units.

Hit up J.A. for a better solution.

I have the same problem on my 2016. Seems like it MOSTLY just let's me ignore, but occasionally it can read them out loud.

Do you happen to notice if it is only when the vehicle is moving? That's my current theory, but I haven't had a chance to test it.

Thanks for posting this. I just switched to a new iPhone and this has been driving me nuts since the text notification worked on my last phone. So simple!

I am starting to think it has something to do with an intermittent blue tooth connection. When I am playing my songs on my phone with blue tooth, and stop my truck and restart it again, I have to turn my bluetooth off and on again on my phone. Otherwise the music stutters and stops and starts and stutters. Kinda weird. Still trying to diagnose the problem. I am always moving when I use this feature.

After much testing, I have come to the conclusion that the text to speech just doesn't work consistently with my phone and truck and probably never will.

The messaging just seems to consistently suck. If I forget this device on my phone and remove the phone on my truck and start from scratch, it works great. When I push the messaging button, it displays my messages and incoming messages get spoken like they should.
Unfortunately when I turn my truck off and on again, that seems to get lost and every time I push messaging, it just says, would you like to set up messaging? I push yes and it does its thing but doesn't actually set it up
So, it's almost like I have to delete and re pair my phone every time I turn on my truck every time I drive if I want this to work properly.

Oh well.... Still a great truck. Just a little frustrating. Maybe I'll go climb a mountain or something.

Hipshot69,

Could it be possible that your headunit need to be updated with the latest software/firmware update?
Just because it's brand new doesn't mean it has the latest software/firmware....

I would contact the dealership, tell them your issues. It's worth a try!

I had issues with mine rebooting and freezing up, contacted the dealership...brought it in, they flashed it with the techstream latest software update & fixed my issues.
