I'm replacing the evaporator core on my 03 4 Runner with 260k miles on it. Should I replace anything else while I have it torn apart? All recommendation would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking about selling the 4Runner and want the AC to work before selling it. So I don't want to just throw money at it but I also don't want to take the time to take the entire dash out and not replace something that will likely need replacing soon.

Make sure your new evaporator comes with a new descant bag. And you will need a small amount of refrigerant oil too. Most system leaks occur at the valve cores too, replace them.

All your refrigerant oil should still remain in the system once you recover or release the 134A. Just make sure you check all your fittings and change the shrader cores. Most places leaks are found are around the shaft seal of the compressor so before you pull the refer out get some dawn and do a bubble check around there unless your out of 134A completely. Make sure you do the next owner a favor a vacuum the system down really well before charging it again. Don's use any of the refrigerant that has additives and crap. Good ole pure 134A will work far better in the long run IMO. Though my expertise is in commercial HVAC i would assume all the same applies to automotive.

Almost forgot. when you have gauges on look at the suction pressure. If the pressure and temperature is fairly stable then the expansion valve is working just fine. Even though you are charging it with the factory charge make sure you have a good superheat. (actual suction line temp - saturation temp at the suction line pressure).

Did you replace the condenser and compressor when you had the evaporator replaced? I noticed that the AC doesn’t blow on the driver side of my 2005 Toyota 4Runner. It only blows on the passenger side. I was originally told it was the blower and blend door actuator but it wasn’t that. Mines have all the symptoms of a bad evaporator. Should anything else like the compressor or condenser be replaced at the same time or did the AC cool the driver side after the evaporator was repaired?
