Ever heard of this crazy thing before?

A friend told me that an air intake will not be effective on my truck because of the fact that I have an automatic transmission. He heard this from someone else and believes this. I'm aware of the whole manual vs. automatic debate but this is just ridiculous. :lmao: I am correct for thinking this is crazy right? How can the transmission have anything to do with the air intake in this case?

Intake has nothing to do with the trans, but it still isn't that effective. In fact it'll probably decrease your mileage because you'll be mashing on the gas, VROOOM VROOOM! Unless of course your back side HP gauge is better than mine. :driving:

The stock intake is technically a cold air intake since it pulls air from the fender well. Most if not all aftermarket intakes for our 4runners pull air from the engine bay (hot air), so they're not really affective. However, the auto Trans has absolutely nothing to do with this.

I actually thought this the first time I looked at the engine bay. I thought, "A factory Cold Air Intake?". I was looking to get the Volant CAI but the idea of spending over $200 for a louder engine didn't appeal to me.

Agreed with both of you. If you actually take a look at the stock air intake it does pull from the fender and if you look at some of the other aftermarket brand CAIs, often they are "open" to the engine bay meaning you'll only be pulling hot air from the motor. If the price is worth the enhanced look to you, then by all means go for it. Otherwise, I'd say stick what what you've got or upgrade the air filter and modify it to pull more air from the fender wheel-well.

Yep, it's all about the sound. I did a AFE pro dry drop in filter. You get the benefit of better flow plus keep pulling air from the fender, and it's way cheaper. No added sound, and hard to tell about power, but definitely seems to run smoother. I've only had mine about a month, so time will tell.

heres my take on this, and its just an "opinion" as Im not, a mech or engineer..

The aftermarket CAI are nice, and they look cool, but most will only produce what, about 10 horsepower ? and are we going to really "feel" 10 HP on our heavy SUVs ?? I dont think so.
They do sound great, Ive done the Deckplate Mod, knowing its not going to give me enough power that Im going to notice, but know that it sounds good.

About the added MPG, I have to disagree, only cause when you ad the CAI/deckplate mod, you are always getting in the throttle/flooring it, to hear the new growl, therefore losing MPG.

Again, this is just, my .02 take it for what you paid for it, lol

And 2-5hp is at the high-end.

With computer controlled ignition and fuel-injection...adding a different air-intake will amount to almost NOTHING in increase performance or gas mileage.

30 years ago with carbs and NON-Computer controlled ignition and fuel-injection....you could see significant gains...By significant I mean 4-5hp gains...not much more.
