Excesive Gas Consumption

Hello guys,

I have a 99 4runner 4x4 with 175K, 3.4 V6 I've had it for about 2 weeks now.

When i first got it i was getting about 20 mpg combined for the first 5 tanks or so, then last week on my trip thru baja suddenly the MPG went down to about 15 or so, now it is like 10 MPG. I know it is not the different gasoline because the first 3 thanks or so the MPG was normal.

The car running perfect, smooth and acceleration is great, i don't smell any gas anywhere and i don't see any signs of fuel leakage anywhere the check engine is not on.

So my question is, what could be wrong that i am getting this drasticly poor milage.

Any suggestions?

man i get the same thing i got 11.3 today, but i drive in city mostly and usually only drive 10 minutes per trip.
 
But this is not normal, i was on the highway getting about 320 m per tank and suddenly i started getting barely 200 miles, same driving conditions
 
I just got through my first tank and averaged 16.8 mpg in combined driving. I was hoping for better but I figure it's a truck, it is what it is.
 
Is it possible that US 4Runners have a bigger fuel tank then the Canadian 3rd gen 4Runner?
I check the specs on the ineternet and it showed 1998 had 70 litres of fuel tank. I dont think my 4Runner has that big fuel tank, I guess its like 52 Litres. I can only run 200 miles at the most in on full tank of gas.

My 4runner has a 70 lt / 18.5 gal tank

I told you to lay off the throttle, change spark plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, engine oil, and the rest of the fluids, or you can go to a shop and ask them.
 
Where do you get "bad gas" from? (Besides mexican food?) It all comes from the same place right? Unless buying it from the nastiest of all no-name gas stations I don't understand where you could get bad gas from.

$27-$40 for the spark plug wires depending on where you buy them (I suggest the TE-66 NGK), and you might as well change the spark plugs too which are $15-$, fuel filters range from $13-$20 all personal preference.

It's all on the station and how well they maintain their pumps and tanks...
 
Well not necessarily water. Water has a greater density than gas, so it should sink to the bottom of the tank. However, when I was in college, I worked at a gas station and when we'd check the level in the tanks, we used a large wooden stick. Some of the less intelligent employees would check the tanks that were more full first so they'd pour baby powder on the stick to dry it out so they could see the level on the successive tanks. Personally, I thought it was easier to see which tank was less full and check that one first....
 
Gas can go bad on it's own too, but as far as contaminants go (baby powder aside haha) water is usually what gets in the tanks. I could be wrong, but I think the pump sucks it out from the bottom of the tank where the water would be too.
 
Yeah, petroleum can simply go bad (I'm not really sure what happens there)....but yeah, I wouldnt doubt that the pump retreives from the bottom....

I guess the lesson to be learned on bad gas: Dont be the first in line.
