Exhaust, Programer, and Intake?

Hello All,

I'm sure that the question has been asked in parts but I have not been able to search to find it all together. The majority of you have performance mods done to your t4r's, I have a 4.0 that is great but i'd like to make it a little better. I love the selectable transfer case but i wish it had a little more juice, so the questions is what exhaust ahve you run and what combo programer, intake and exhaust have you had sucess with.

I like the following but i would like to get your opinions...

Exhaust...Magnaflow
Intake...K&N
Programer...send CPU to Superchips for reprograming.

Let me know your thoughts...

Thanks

Bump, i am also looking for the same answers.

I didn't know there was a chip upgrade for the T4R

I have a Superchips cortex for my Xterra and it's excellent.

Cheers

I haven't heard of anyone on here who has a chip for a 4th generation. In the vw community i think everyone and there mom has a chip, but doesnt seem like there are many options for the 4runner?

AlexJet used UniChip I think and said the hassle/ work required to get the FJ model to work on the 4Runner was not worth the measly benefit in the end.

I think Mike07se has long tube headers and says he has noticed hp and tq gains on his V6. Perhaps you want to try that and a free flowing muffler.

I too think headers would free up some hp's but I just dont want to go through that hassel for a v6...I would gasket match the manafold before i did that. You can also debur the head and exhaust manafold for a freeer flowing head. I've hadheaders on a number of cars/trucks and i have had nothing but trouble....thats just my 2 cents.

What exhaust upgrades have you all made...free flowing cats? Cat backs?

What intake options have you explored...K&N FIPK or simular systems, make your own?

The 4R really has no performance upgrades for either the V8 or V6 other than the SC on 03/04 V8's. You can try to modify the sc for the FJ cruiser for use on the 4R. There have been some videos of a south american guy who has done this though IDK any of the details as he is not a member.

The stock CAI is really a great intake, people who have replaced it have found no REAL gain from going aftermarket, it just makes more noise. Perhaps replace the airfilter; however, the OEM Denso one(on the V8 at least) is a fantastic filter.

Your really SOL if you want a performance based 4R as the aftermarket demand is just not there.

You can try free flowing CATSs and have a muffler shop redesign the y-pipe where the two exhaust sides join but then again - how much are you really going to noticeably gain?

How much of a gain could you realistically expect from a reprogrammed computer or chip? I don't see how HP can be made w/o more air and fuel and a chip can't make that happen without physical components to facilitate the changes.
Chips don't produce what is promised on naturally aspirated engines and in the last 15 years I've never seen any gains that are worth the money from just a chip.

urd just made a y pipe for the 4runner, i been wanting to ask him for more pics of it, i was gona try using doug thorley pipes from the fj cruiser on the 4runner, but i didnt have the money for it, well for 500 now u can get a urd y pipe for the 4runner

I can't quote on a 4runner,

but my chip in my xterra made a dramatic difference. I gained 21 hp to the wheels and it also removed the WOT throttle restriction which from 0-40 made the truck seem like night and day.

For the $325 i spent on it, it was one of the best hp/$ purchases i ever made.

More info on the Xterra would be nice. Got a dyno comparing it to stock? Was the chip the only modification?

Was it the older SC'd model because it would be impossible to see that kind of gain (which would be well over 30 crankhorse) on a NA 4th gen and if it was possible somebody on here would've done this mod a long time ago.

A chip cannot produce more ponies without adding more air or fuel but on an SC'd or turbo application it simply delays the wastegate opening to produce more boost and reprograms the fuel delivery. On a naturally aspirated motor a chip might make a few ponies but never near 21whp.

It was dyno'd at a friends shop. We never printed or saved the files. It was in the middle of the day and after enough bit_hing he finally let me strap it down and we made 2 runs. One on 87 stock tune, then one on the 93 performance tune.

The peak hp gain was low in the RPMs which may mean that it had more to do with the WOT restriction being taken out than the tune itself.

But regardless, with higher octane fuel and a leaner table with some timing it is more than possible to extract more power from an NA motor. Mine is the 4.0 2nd gen. my truck is an 08.

Also, with my Z06, the first mod i did was an intake and a tune. I gained 45hp to the wheels. My power went from 445 to 490.

A good tune and the right fuel, while it won't ever double an engine's power.....can provide considerable gains.

Cheers

I do believe the gain on the Nissan was more from the restriction being removed but on the Z06 being SC'd then that's very realistic as I saw a over 20whp gain and a half second in the 1/4 mile with just an intake and exhaust on my '93 turbo Eclipse.

I'd love to see a gain on the 4th gens but I don't think it would match your Xterra's or even be close but I'd like to proven wrong.

So would i.

Regarding the Z06. The Intake and tune was done when the car was bone stock. The SC came later.

Also....small world. I used to be a DSM guy too. my first car was a 95 Eclipse GS-T. Then had a 98 GSX. Then an 03 Evo, after that was stolen, i had an 05 evo. That car made 620whp on pump/meth when i sold it. It was sick.

Funny..I too was a DSM guy...98 GSX!

With that being said, I have my time in both a shop and around a dyno...I know about a chip how it works and what it works with, I'm just newer to the t4r's and extracting hps from them. You do gain HP's by adding a proper intake, exhaust (correct for application and correct calculated diameter) the chip comes in to tell everything what to do and how to do it....the dyno lets you dial it all in, i can even see increasing injectors for proper mixture.

Anyway, I dont want to cause waves in the water I just wanted some input on what works for the t4r. I guess i got to get back to the drawing table and build some stuff that works for everyone. I know these motors can produce a ton of HP's I just need to now find it.

Thanks for everything...I guess I found my calling again!

as you know, depending on what you do, just opening the exhaust & intake might take away from your low end, but will add to your upper. thats how the aftermarket companies judge the hp & tor. so called improvements. if ya like zooming down the highway or flooring it, thats great, but average driving around town, not so much. ( lower gears might help for that) i know your talking about the v6,but from my own experience with the v8 was, after the volant cai with (wet filter) & borla exhaust it lost some lower end , so i installed a unichip 2 programmed exactly for THESE mods, the result was a very good all around improvment (stp dyno), problem was, the chip is picky on how it works with other things, (different filter, remote start, etc,)i would have to keep resetting the ecu, so i took the unichip out, installed a hiflo jet MAP, DRY volant filter, capped off the box & ran the intake to outside engine bay to make it a true cai. the result is fine for me now, again this was on a v8 not the v6, but im fairly certain the problems would be similar for both.so my 2 cents would be, do the magnaflow & or headers/hiflo cats, either mod the stock box or get an aftermarket with the dry filter, (oiled ones have been known to foul the MAP, it did in my case.) & save the $ & forget the chip until a better solution for one comes out .right now, nothing worthwhile is really made for the t4r. & reprogramming the ecu would cost $ $ $ & without these other mods, probobly not worth it. i believe the combination of all the things everybody has mentioned would net you great improvement, but just 1 or even 2, might not give ya what your looking for. goodluck
