Exhaust? What to do?

I picked up the Borla exhaust a few months back. I really didnt want to spend the money but I knew that they sounded good and provided a tuned item specific to our vehicle that would match my open breathing on the front end. I have been extremely happy with the deep sound that comes from it. Does not sound tinny or ricey at all. Obviously not as deep as my buddies Borla on his Tundra but pretty darn good. And for what its worth its a true cat back system. I did have them modify it so that it was a side exit though.

I have a smashed magna flow 14" with the exhaust cut off right at the rear axle. It sounds pretty good. It use to be loud, but with the cut off and the new dent in it it seems perfect :)

I would pickup a Borla muffler and have a shop throw together a catback for you. TRD sound, without the pricetag.

I had a borla muffler on my 2000 2wd 4runner and it droned like crazy....I absolutely hated it.

Iron pigg used to sell some mufflers...not sure if they had one for the 4runner or not but they sold trail tone and OEM quiet. I'm sure they could tell you something that "sounds good"

Borla muffler with a resonator then, lol. Do you remember which model you had, what diameter, etc?

My computers been down for several days but no I dont remember. It was a direct replacement so it fit our stock pipes. Was told by the muffler shop that it would be quiet but no dice.

to eliminate the resonance / hummm at highway speeds you can weld a tundra resonance silencer in line with the muffler. I believe on mine it is 2-4" from the muffler exhaust side.

For me, this eliminated nearly all the low warble at low RPMs on highway.

+ you should be able to get one for "near free" if you call around or look online or go to the scrap yard (it will still be good).

The Tundra part doesn't limit the airflow either because it was designed for a V8.

I am running flowmaster and currently searching for new exhaust tip to buy.

Well of course the "best" persay would be the TRD catback system but not the best for the price.

I agree it is the best, but not for the price. I got my TRD cat-back used for cheap so I'm happy, but I wouldn't pay $700 or whatever to get one from Toyota.

Trd is quiet at high rpm... I don't like that as I have an intake and it screams at high rpm... I want something to match my intake..

My TRD is about as quiet as stock at idle, but at higher rpms it's low and loud. I have an AirRaid intake and the TRD matches it very well IMO. It's perfect, any louder would be annoying to me.

I'm sure this is resolved by now, but its only a month so I'll post. I just ordered a TRD cat-back yesterday, I really wanted a Borla but found that they are not made for 01 and 02 models, per Borla at least. I really didn't want to drill out a new O2 sensor as that will void any warranty, again per Borla. The cheapest I found a Borla cat-back for was $615 w/ free shipping, I ended up getting the TRD cat-back brand new for $600. That's pretty spendy but I figure if the stock lasted 10 years this should go another 10, which will probably be just about it for my truck after 20 years of New England winters. So I figured the $600 wasn't too bad.

If I could go back in time I would have just spent the $650 for a new Borla or TRD. I have gone through 3 exhausts and although I am happy now, I have had to pay for install / welding on each one so it has been $$.

Most cheap aftermarket exhausts break down within 3-5 years. The really expensive ones such as Borla or a TRD will come with 100,000k warranty.

EVERYONE: don't buy a magnaflow
.

I'm very happy with my TRD cat back. It's almost as quiet as stock at idle, but it has a nice low tone once you get your rpms up.

I'm thinking of getting a flowmaster 40 series (original or delta, i haven't decided yet, probably the original). I've had a vortex for the last 2+ years, and from experience the flow-thru design is great for relieving back-pressure and high rpm revving, but I felt a lost of low end torque with it. The quality of the vortex is not very good also, first, the paint gets burned off quick as you can see in the photo. second, after 2+ years, the FACTORY welding seam started to crack (also in photo), and has now cracked all around. I realized the muffler was cracked when one morning I realized the 4runner was louder and as I drove out I felt a huge lost in low end torque -- the same feeling i got when someone chopped off my catalytic convertor.

So i'm going to go with a flow-master to get back some of the low end torque and still have a nice, rich sound.

What makes you think the Flowmaster will provide more torque?

I'm interested to see how it goes though. I've also had mine for over two years. Changing things up can be good. :)

dynaflow super turbo

and a tundra resonator with the elbow and intake mod. Sounds good and i like the improved throttle response as a result. :infidel:

cherry bomb vortex are ok until it start to rust, same thing happen to me, but it took 3 years to crack on all welds of the muffler, i found a flowmaster super 44 offroad on ebay and got it put on a day later, wat a difference in sound. i might just try the 40s but they are also a lil bigger.
