Exhaust Y-Pipe/CAT for V8's

by the way, I did have the egg smell (sulfer) and the turning of the tail pipe help, but only at operating temp. during cold engine do the the rear bumber being aerodinamic it still brings in a little smell. But it helped ALOT.

I have a QUESTION!! I want to dual my exhaust system on my 2004 V-6 with both tails turning out behind the rear wheels. I have a quote for a cat-back Magnaflow system single pipe system. I'm wanting to know if anyone here has dualed out their V-6 exhaust system.

RXvedud,

Thank you for the great pics. I can see why you pulled the stock third CAT all together. Somewhere above someone mentioned that that third CAT was a resonator, not a CAT. Did you confirm that this was a CAT, and not a resonator, like is elsewhere in the system?

I had thought about flanging my kit, as you appear to have done with yours, and provide a straight pipe with flanges. Then, if people needed/wanted, they could take the stock CAT and have it welded between some flanges. This would allow them swap out the CAT/straight-pipe when they wanted. My experience in CA is that many smog inspectors will catch things like the third CAT being missing. I have also seen good "free flow" CATs produce enough power, relative to a straight pipe, that the difference was statistically irrelevant. For those reasons I was going to make my kit with an included free flow CAT.

However, not including a CAT, and permitting customers to either weld flanged on their stock CAT, or do a straight pipe, would make the kit much cheaper. Thoughts everyone?

Very interesting and makes a lot of sense, especially on the 03-04 V8s. The VVTi engines have a very different exhaust system V6 and V8 compared to the 03-04 V8s, need to see where the pipes get together on them as well.

VX, is that a cat or resonator you cut out?

I would like to clear something up. There are three cats on the '03-'04 V8s (one on each header and one after the y-pipe), one BIG muffler and a resonatore at the end.

I have not looked under a VVTi model so I can not say anything about those.

Here is a quick suggestion. Since Duc Hunter is taking the time to do some research on this exhaust thing.... What if someone looked into trying to bolt up the VVT-I exhaust to a non-VVT-I truck. Toyota might have found some extra ponies by designing a higher flowing exhaust along with the VVT-I?

I noticed the Y-pipe issue when I first bought my truck. That thing looks like a couple of guys wacked at some pipes, welded them together, and then showed the Toyota Execs that the truck worked! I think there is a lot of room under the truck for some creativity. Anyway, Duc Hunter good luck! I will definitely be interested in this part if it materializes.

can someone put up a pic of the VVT-i y pipe please. That way we can take a look at the two and do a visual descision.

as for creativity, I originaly wanted to do a magnaflow mufler that was 2-2 1/4" in and 1- 3"out from the headers back, eliminating the third cat and the ypipe all together.

so the part actually removed is a resonator right? I am thinking about doing this but wanted to make sure its a resonator and not a cat that I am removing in favor of the custom y-pipe. To me it looks like a resonator since there are already two cats located right off the headers.

It's a catalytic converter.
