Exhaust?

This is probably going to sound very ignorant to many on here, but I'm going to ask anyway. I've got a 2006 SR5, and the exhaust pipe is for obvious reasons pretty worn and rusted. I was debating replacing it for purely aesthetic reasons, and I was considering getting one that's chrome, since my particular vehicle has a lot of chrome trim in various places.

Questions:

1. Is this a bad idea for safety reasons?
2. Is it something I can likely do on my own or would it be better to get a trust autobody shop to do it? I've never even tried to do any work like this.


I'm not trying to make the vehicle sound any different or anything like that, but just was looking for a newer nicer looking exhaust pipe.

Ok......

1 unless the exhaust has holes in it or leaking I personally would leave it alone.

2 unless you are having the pipe chromed, noone makes a " chrome" pipe for a 4runner. There's polished stainless, brushed stainless etc. But no chromed.

You would want to take your vehicle to a mechanic or exhaust shop NOT a body shop.

I dont know what "pipe" you are referring to but the pipe after the cat is the intermediate pipe, the pipe after the muffler is a tailpipe with the resonator on it. You can just paint the tailpipe with black heat resistant paint or just get a tip and install it.

T4R isn't a vehicle i would expect to see exhaust pipes on.

I'm not sure how much snow NM sees but I'd second inscarguy, unless it's rusted out and leaking/failing your state's emissions test then I wouldn't spend all that $$$ on replacing the exhaust system.

That being said, you can consider installing a chrome exhaust tip if a chrome appearance is what you're after - PT18A89090ET should be the part number for our 4R's. I have an '06 SR5 (so chrome trim galore - grille, door handles, etc.) and had considered one to match the chrome garnish on the tailgate, but decided to hold off as I haven't decided whether I ultimately want to color-match, blackout with vinyl or Plastidip, or just leave the chrome trim as-is.

I'm thinking the OP means that the exhaust top is rusted and he wants to put an aftermarket tip on it. In which case, a "chrome" or polished tip is totally normal just to make it look nicer from the outside.

I had a feeling I'd come off sounding like a dumbass, but yes essentially all I'm asking about is the tip of the tailpipe. Words mean things and I should have taken more time to spell out what I was interested in, but thanks to all those who replied. A few minutes in the Haynes manual would have probably served me well.

It's not a major item of concern for me, so I very well may just leave it alone, but just figured I'd ask. I hadn't considered just putting the appropriate type of black paint on it, but that might not look bad. I've got a tow package that has some rust in a few areas but overall it's black and so there is a fair amount of black in that general area of the vehicle as it is. Something to think about I suppose.

With all of this having been said, the conversation has caused me to wonder if I should take another look at the area in question. Have any of you suffered any significant effects from rust? Anything I should look out for in terms of components that get more worn out than others? I figure it won't hurt me to get under the vehicle and take a look to see the condition of all the components and maybe learn a few things while I'm at it.

Does anyone know if i replace my stock muffler with flowmaster 40 series if i will need to retune my vehicle?

You should need to get ear plugs and then you'll be good to go.

I got the 40 series on my 4.0 and I deleted the resonator too. Best thing I've done to the truck. It's a bit loud but I love it. No retuning or anything needed

I had a hole in my muffler and decided to go with the Magnaflow Cat-back system.

To me the Magnaflow offers a good balance of giving a nice roar when you get on it, but not droning at highway speeds and not being obnoxiously loud all the time.

Not mine, but a good representation of what it sounds like inside the cabin while on the throttle hard and just normal driving:

Looks like the price has gone up from when I installed mine a few years ago, I paid around $550 from Amazon:

This system also eliminates the resonator and has nice looking dual stainless side exit tips.
It is also bolt on, no cutting or welding required. One of the reasons I went with it, was able to do it myself instead of paying a shop to cut and weld a new muffler in.

Hey Guys, I am very new to this site. I tried looking around to answer my question but i couldnt find anything. So my 06 grew up in the rust belt. that said - i need an entire new exhaust system. From the engine block back to the tailpipe. the dealership quoted me like 1400 bucks to replace itl. Any recomendations on brands? should i buy my own and take it to have it installed at a local mechanic?
