Extended warranty questions

I have some questions to help me decide about getting an extended warranty that I hope someone here can answer...

1) What are the options (different miles/months, coverage, etc) when buying a Toyota extended warranty?
2) What is/are the ballpark price(s) and are they fixed or negotiable?
3) Any advantage of getting it now or waiting? I'm guessing that waiting will raise the price if for no other reason than inflation.
4) I'm I better off with a Toyota or after-market warranty?

3) You have a 3 year warranty I'd wait until your almost out.

Grant, I have owned vehicles for 33 years now. I am a firm believer in the fact that, while extended warranties can give you piece of mind, if it is a quality product then they are nothing more than an additional revenue stream for the manufacturer or business. The Toyota standard warranty, to me, is more than enough time for a component to fail due to a design flaw. Usually if it does not fail in the first several thousand miles then it is good to go to it's normal design life. I particularly like Hondas, Toyotas and Subarus as they have proven most reliable after all these years. I know this does not answer your question but I figure if I have to spend 1K or so extra to keep from spending MORE than that to get my vehicle to 100K miles then I shouldn't have bought it in the first place. My .02.

I generally agree with #1 engineer on most things, like tv's and computers, but car repair can be crazy expensive. I bought the 6 yr 100K at near the price quoted above. Many dealers will quote twice that and will not budge. Be sure to estimate the miles you will likely drive to figure the best package.

Saved me a lot - all four door lock actuators ($350 each), power roof (don't remember what my repair cost them but can be $2,000+)

If you have a 4wd then it is really a no-brainer.

I went to the 4Runner from an Acura CL that had 7 automatic transmissions replaced - proving that even a design flaw does not necessarily get fixed.
I rushed to buy the $1K warranty on it after learning about their failure rate. Yes, Acura extended their warranty on them so I really did not need the extra warranty. But the 6 days avg out of service for them to put in another junk transmission was a pain. Not to mention the dead on road failure mode.

I should have put a qualifier that I very rarely keep a vehicle past 100K.

1 engineer has a point, if you plan to keep your vehicle past 100,000 miles then maybe yes you should buy one, if not then maybe put $1000 in your savings acct and see where you are 3 years later.
I have a Limited with Nav and all the bells and whistles, and I plan on keeping her for as long as I can so to me it's worth the piece of mind

I plan on keeping it for a long time. I ordered my '93 Explorer, custom from the factory, that's 19 yrs ago. However, I'm a low mileage driver, in the 19yrs I racked up a whopping 150K as my only vehicle.

I actually bought my first extended warranty with this used 2010 limited (19k miles) due to the issues I had with my FJ Cruiser. (I came >< close to walking away from Toyota...and I originally came to Toyota brand in 2007 based on reliability! The FJ Cruiser changed my perspective on the quality aspect)

My extended bumper to bumper warranty (Covers everything except what I add to the vehicle) is of the 100k variety so it covers me until 119k miles.

And yes, I do plan on driving it beyond 100k (I drive an average of 20k per year) and had plans to drive my FJ beyond 100k however it went 88k before it needed roughly $6,000 in repairs (Master Cyclinder computer control module and the dreaded 'FJ Shudder', which, last researched, turns out to be a new rear end!)

Just ordered the same warranty from Jerry earlier today. He was very responsive and easy to work with. My previous 4th Gen (that I sold to my brother) hasn't had any problems....but I guess I just wanted the piece of mind. Recently, I've had a few things crop up on my 5th Gen that I'm in the process of getting fixed.

I just bought my 2014 4runner. I tried getting a hold of this Jerry fellow for info several times and didn't get any calls back or emails returned. But on the upside I showed the dealer the quotes on this thread and got the 7yr 100,000 mile platinum warranty for 1k. Not bad!!!!
