Extreme 3rd Gen Build! Insane!

Did you install yourself? Where did you purchase from and knowing what you know now - would you still choose Spartan?

I ordered it from Amazon about a two years ago. Was about $300 I think and I installed it myself in my driveway of our old house. Just took an afternoon to do. I loved that locker! Never had a problem with it and it gave me the traction I needed to hit the harder trails with just 33" tires and 3" lift.

I would highly recommend one for the budget conscious T4R owner who will run the stock Toyota axles. I only ran one in the rear with an open front. The automatic diffs don't handle the lunchbox lockers well I was told. My buddy put two in his T4R and the front bound up a lot. I think it was user error, though. :heh:

I didn't go with one up front because I knew at that point I was going to SAS it and didnt want to waste any more money on the IFS setup.

Scalpel... Doctor, we are fresh out of scalpels. Well then nurse, hand me that badass Sawzall over there. Let's begin the first incision at the posterior "C" pillar. The second incision at the anterior "D" pillar. Careful not to scratch the paint!

That's right folks; the decision was a coin toss. Heads and I chop off the rear roof and make a bed for the spare, fuel cell, etc. Tails we keep the extra weight and leave it stock. Heads it is then.

The glass has to go first.

Then we start cutting!

Measure for the rear deck lid cuts and then remove any obstacles inside the decklid. (I have all the electronics for the rear decklid in great working order if anyone needs the parts.)

IMG_5534.jpg

After a little trimming, the decklid is starting to look right at home. Still need to do some trimming and grafting of some sheet-metal where I got a little too sawzall happy. :D

Looks like a perfect spot for a spare!

This evening I removed the rear Axle, the fuel tank, and a few other things not needed with my plasma cutter - OH YEAH! like butta! :becky:

Look through the pics, you will see the 14 bolt that's going in the rear. Gotta add the disk brakes and clean it up first. That's next, but first still need to clean up chassis.

Any plans for a tailgate?

Yup, going to build one from tubing. At an angle to hold spare and jack but keep as low as possible in the bed to enhance visibility rearward.
Not sure of actual design yet. Will mock it up once bed is fully constructed. That won't get finished until the cage is in so I have plenty of room while the back of the 4R is open.

Did I miss it or did you say how much you were going to bob out of the rear?

Looks great so far!

Not sure I want to bob the rear right away. Will need the space for fuel cell, spare, etc. Besides its already the perfect size. I may eventually extend the wheelbase a tad when I link it. That's a ways off though.

Shit's getting real in here... Will be watching over the build. I've always wanted to hack the back hatch but I don't have the nerves to do it lol. I'd like to believe that mine is still too nice to do it :D

I hear ya. One of the main reasons I'm not chopping the top like you did and bobbing the bed is I really like the extra space.

I'm moving my rear axle back 7" though....so bobbing it really wouldn't do a whole lot in my case.

I've had many folks screaming at me, "THAT 4Runner IS MINT! It's a 2002 with low miles, Why destroy it!" Well, it is in fantastic condition... Err, it was when I started at least. :wow2: But you know what? It's mine, I have a vision in my head of what I want it to become and I'm going to see that through.

I didn't want to start from scratch with a tube buggy build or something like that. I didn't need a nice mild adventuring daily driver (it's already been that for three years, plus my daily is the truck that tows this beast to the off-road parks and my wife has a 2016 Jeep JKU.

I also didn't want to start with a cheap beater I had to sink money into to get running right, do an engine swap, or anything like that. I want a unique hard-core rock crawling, mud slinging, mountain goat that can go anywhere I want it to and still be safe and civil enough to take the wife and kids with me up the trail. So I started with a excellent and clean T4R, my favorite off-road vehicle since I first saw one in 1984 when I was a kid.

I really did flip a coin about skinning the rear end, and I also hesitated briefly, but once I started hacking the roof off I felt better. It felt right and I love it. It's not for everyone and that's okay. This is my rig and I'm going to do it my way. :whoo:

Right on. Screw what everyone else thinks....it's your rig.

Today I managed to tear the rest of the interior apart except the carpet in prep for the cage, new suspension seats, harnesses, etc., and to cut out the center tunnel to make room for the new NP205 transfer case and NP203 doubler down below. Couldn't find my 36mm socket to finish taking the front end apart, so I started on the tunnel with the transfer case and front driveshaft. I'll run and grab a 36mm socket so I can finish this weekend.

Some of the parts for the 14 bolt showed up today, so that's coming up soon. Converting to disk brakes, regearing from 3.73 to 5.36 final drive, new seals, etc.

Does, anyone need some VSC sensors / accelerometers, airbags, or seatbelts? Let me know.

Looky what the UPS man brought me today! My GM NP203 Range Box to mount up to my Ford NP205 transfer case. Built specifically for my rig (as a divorced unit) by the engineers at Offroad Design in Colorado. Got the triple stick kit too. This rig is going to not just be a masterpiece, but also a billy goat!

Here's the triple stick shift kit for the dual range setup. I will convert the 205 shift rails to allow for front digs. Basically, separate the front and rear outputs so that I can run the T4R in just rear wheel drive, or just front wheel drive in any setting: 4H, 4L, or 4Double Low (4:1 crawl Ratio).
