Extreme 3rd Gen Build! Insane!

So, it's all fixed now. Then went to Dixie Run a few weeks ago and broke the steering ram off after a really hard landing. Welded it back on and went back out. Then the upper control arm broke through the rusty frame. So now it sits in my shop waiting to be fixed again. THEN BACK OUT FOR MORE CARNAGE! HAHAHAHAH! :50cal:

New Project

I have bought and sold so many project vehicles over the last 4 years since finishing this one, that it is hard to keep up. But I have one that has been sitting around and needs to get started. The hauler for this rig.

1986 GMC Squarebody Crew cab that will be mated to a 2008 Ford F-450 chassis, powered by an all mechanical Cummins 12v diesel engine. She's going to be a beast... which works to haul this Toyota beast!

This November the Chimera project will do one last ride, then she will be brought into the shop and completely stripped and torn down to its basic parts. Everything will then be built back up on the frame and body of a 1985 Jeep CJ7, including the drivetrain.

Can't wait to get the "hey, awesome Jeep" from all the Jeep die-hards who give me crap about running a Toyota in Jeep events, then when they want to know if I'm running an LS V8, then say, nope! A Toyota 5VZ-FE. The looks on their faces will be priceless.

I do miss my CJ7, so I'll have the best of both worlds. The cool look of a great classic road-worthy Jeep CJ with the reliability of a Toyota. Love going at it with Jeep people. lol :fencing:

So I picked this up in an even swap for another project I had laying around. Titled, running, but the tub is CRAP. But it came with a new tub and a ton of extra parts that were brand new, including a new soft top.

Very interesting idea. Don't know if I'd do it personally over dropping in one of the AMC V8s but I'm all for weird swaps
We too have a CJ7 in our family, an 84 I believe. Has the infamous AMC20 rear and being a late model it of course has a crooked frame, both of which have long been addressed and fixed. Inline 6 - doesn't quite scream like the V8s but definitely more than enough for a 2400lb 4x4 :laugh: Still looks good for being thrashed around for 40 years, but most of that is due to it's makeover 10 years ago... and AMC Chestnut being identical in color to both Rustoleum and Sharpie :smokin:

Yeah, I love doing weird swaps. I just like things that no one else has that I built. I could drop an LS in it, I have a Cummins 4BT that would work great too. But right now it is about the lowest cost and since the 4Runner drivetrain is mint and it's there, why not!

So, a little side project that I will start a new thread on. But figured I'd give my followers a taste and a link to go check it out. As soon as this gets out of the shop the Jeepota (Toyjeepa?) project will roll in and get underway. So this one needs to be quick. I'll post the Jeepota project on this thread since it's the next variation of this build.

It once was, but shall no longer be. At the heart of things, it will be... sorta. But I've never been one to be boxed in by all the status quo restraints.

In a spritely 9 degrees F. I pulled the ol' 4Runner into the shop for the very last time. A bitter-sweet moment as I look at it in its current state. Beaten on, tattered, rusting (again). I have put her through some hard and grueling events, yet she has always been strong and bold. Going where no others dared to venture. In sand, mud, rock, rain, and snow, she always started up and never failed to deliver what was asked of her. Now, I sit here in amazement at the entire build and the adventures we have had over the last six years. Sad to tear her down, but like the phoenix, she will rise again from the ashes to become something new (and for a short time shiny again).



She's been to many events over the years.

Slowly stripping her down. All of these are good parts, so if anyone needs anything (and I still have it) give me a shout.

The dash is surprisingly easy to remove and replace.





And I have the 5VZ-FE Golden Eagle Edition (anyone who knows the history of Jeep CJ-7s will get that reference)...


All fluids are drained and the drive train comes out next.
