Yeah, I know the Wiren's--they own the place, but have not seen them in several years (5?). If you ever come up here we should get together, send me a PM and we can work it out.

Removing the radiator cap releases pressure, which is an exothermic reaction--gives off heat causing things to cool. Kinda like removing a bottle cap from an extra cold beer, liquid when sealed but open it and ice crystals form...

Yeah, I got all the cold weather stuff: block heater, oil pan heater, battery heater/trickle charger, etc. I had a zip-up vinyl cover for my 93 4Runner radiator, and it worked okay. Haven't seen any for the 04's though--can't imagine they would look good. Going to customize one out of closed cell foam. Since there is plenty of room under the hood it won't even show.

They were there in July 03. I haven't been back since, but if I do, I'll certainly let you know!

You're right about it being counter intuitive. Makes perfect sense after you explained it.

Some type of air block like the foam right inside the hood against the radiator would work great. Lots of room and easy to reach inside.

When we started talking about doing the drive, I started doing research. The one in the pic is bolt on and probably a custom job. There are RV travel shops around that do them for vehicles being towed behind RV's although they did not look as neat as this one. I'll see if I can find the links again. I wasn't real satisfied with the results and did not keep them. I'll bet there are some primo oil field welders that could fab one up if they had a good pic. Here's a closeup. The brackets look detachable which would be great.

After seeing the close-up I think I can make one easily enough out of 1/2" angled aluminum, pop rivets and screen. Painted flat black of course so I don't get any sun glare in me eye.

I'd bet so. Toughest part might be the clearance between the hood and fender for the bracket to fit and not scrap either side. My 03 is pretty tight with not much gap.

Yeah, I'll definately have to watch the clearance. A closer up near the hood edge would help--any chance you could send ne a full res cropped version if the forum kicks it back cause it is too large? Thanks for the input:driving:

I will add that in that cold valley (and others) it was not only my steering that was stiff, but also the suspension, and braking felt like I was pushing molasses through the brake lines. I was toasty warm inside the car, however.

So have you been at the base of the Brooks range long? I'm assuming your job is "easier" in winter since remote areas are accessable via land when it's too wet in summer?

Spring/breakup is the worst--talk about MUD!!! I just finished my tenure up north, now going to work a little farther south (in the Alaska Range). Unfortunately, I can't drive there

As far as fluids go: Wherever I can use synthetic I do so--oil, and bearing grease especially. As far as I know we are stuck with the same ole same ole nothing special for brake and power steering. Realistically, its darn had to find liquids that perform well over a temperature range from 100F to -60F.
