Factory push button start on SR5/TE

It probably wouldn't be worth it to go with OEM. You would have to take into account at minimum a new key fob, the push button, the plastic trim pieces for the dash, and all the sensors that go along with this system (passenger side, driver side, rear lift gate). You are looking at new handles for the passenger and driver side and the new tailgate trim with the cutout for the up/down functionality where the key hole is. This isn't even getting started with the electrical wiring wizardry for the sensors to communicate with the car.
I'm not sure if member BFLAN is still on here, but I believe he was the only one that attempted an aftermarket push start system on his truck. Take a look at his previous threads.

Awesome, thank you. Found the thread and that seems like a nice option. Probably A LOT cheaper too.

You would also have to figure out how to bypass/defeat the steering wheel lock.

I'm not a Toyota engineer, but what Mason described in his post may turn out to be the tip of the iceberg, if you consider that the SR5 or TE probably doesn't have the wiring (harnesses) to support the push button start electronics.
Only you can decide if it's worth the time/money, as it's likely to cost a bucket full of cash, especially if you pay someone else to do the work. Don't forget that Toyota doesn't give away the parts either. The smart key fob will cost about $400 each.
We also have a Lexus RX350 with push button start, and we love it. I would like it in our new TE, but wouldn't even consider doing the change-over. I'm just not rich enough, nor do I have the patience.
If you do any further research on time/money to do the change, please let us know what you find.
It's very possible and not all that expensive.. BUT that's largely dependent on if you want to eliminate the hard key completely. On my 2002 Honda CRV i had a S2000 factory start button. It still needed the key to turn off the factory mobilizer, but you would use the button to actually start the car.

So the question is if you want it for the coolness factor, or because you don't want to take your keys out of your pocket.

I'd be interested in seeing your write up for this system. While I have no desire to do it, I'm interested in how you'll get it to work, what it will cost and how much time will be involved. Looks like a neat system Advanced Keys offer.

Maybe it's just me but I hate push start. I have a s2000 and it's the most annoying thing. Especially since you have to insert the key, turn it, then hit the button.
I like the Mazda system where there is no key. I think that's how the limiteds are too. Proximity sensor and your good.
Of all the things I don't like about the 4Runner. The key is not one of them.
I'd rather have someone create something to make the rear hatch automatically close or open rather than keyless starting.

I would just like the convenience of not having to take the key out of my pocket and incorporate remote starting capabilities. I went to an alarm shop yesterday and might end up just doing the advancedkeys setup or just the viper system that can be controlled via phone app. Both if these options will DEFINITELY be cheaper than trying to make the factory system work.

i think we need to clarify that the OP is wanting a "smart key" setup not a push button system.
push button for me is just useless since you have to take out your key and still insert the key.
smart key system like my 2012 prius where you can have it in your luggage/backpack/anywhere near you and open doors/start the car by pressing down on the brakes and pressing the start button
