Factory Roof rack - Useless?

I mounted my Roof top tent to my factory Urban runner rack as well as my awning. It held both of them just fine. It's not ideal, but it works.

Stock rack with tred pros mounted with rok straps, neoprene wrapped the crossbars to dampen any rubbing/sound.
2 1.75gal rotopax on locking mounts, home made aluminum bracket mounts to underside of Yamika mighty mounts for a low profile mount.
60" hi lift mounted straight through the stock cross bars. I can confirm that they do in fact have aluminum structural supports inside of them.
Watchya using for the hi lift setup? I was trying to use those might mounts and it just didn't feel solid with the high lift. Works great with the maxtrax though, bolted in the corners. Very interested in the specs of your setup. What size hole is that?

Hi lift mount was 1/2" holes drilled through crossbars with 1/2" bolts down through, wing nuts on the bottom. Secure and tool less. Lock it with a cable lock.
Since I've moved to a prinsu rack for more space I'm also selling my Yakima 23H mounts (Set of 4) and that aluminum rotopax contraption if anyone wants it. Rotopax mounts not included.
Roof Rack Question
Hi, the roof rack on my '97 4Runner was removed a few years ago and powder coated. I am finally getting around to putting it back on. I have all the hardware but the real problem is the screw inserts that are in the roof. They're all rusted. I found new inserts but have no idea how to put the new ones in as the old ones are anchored in there pretty well. Do I need to take it to a body shop or a Toyota dealer... or what? They are obviouly not meanyt to be removed as they hold the weight of whatever the rack is carrying but I need to replace the severly rusted ones.Thanks for any help.

Hi, your 4Runner is a 3rd Gen so you'd probably have better luck posting your question in the 3rd Gen sub-forum.

Hey fellas, I seem to have stupidly lost the hardware that goes with the factory rails. All of it. I have the actual rails and crossbars, minus one of the feet that go with one of the rails (somehow a box got misplaced when moving). Does anyone know the list of hardware for a 2006 Sport Edition that I'll need to put them back on?
I would just get another rack at this point, considering I'll have to buy that foot somewhere, but as far as I can tell, unless I'm willing to drop a grand, I'd have to attach a roof rack to my factory rails.

Are there decently priced options that you know of that would replace the factory rails, or am I better off trying to find some bits and pieces for mine? I do really like the Rola rack, I've been eyeing it for a while!
Sorry I’m bringing this back but wanting to get a rola rack given I won’t be using it much so the cost makes more since than a Gobi or what not. Question though...... which one did you use and how did you mount it low like that?

One option for the factory roof rack is to make crossbar mounting brackets and use Thule or Yakima cross bars.
I made these out of high-strength stainless steel angle iron, grade 8 bolts and 3/16" steel flatbar. This allows the crossbars to be mounted much lower than the Yakima or Thule mounts, and it only cost about $70 for the mounts vs $200.

So how did you capture the bolt head inside the track to tighten it down? Slip a wrench into the track?

The carriage bolts have a square section at the base of the bolt that fits perfectly in the track, so it doesn’t spin as you tighten everything down. I did need to add a thin washer behind the track so the square base didn’t extend past the track.

Not sure if LFD has been mentioned in here yet. I just got mine. Awesome stuff and out of this world customer service. I think I have seen Jacob, one of the owners, on this forum before.
