Background / Story: The Toyota 4Runners, especially the 3rd gens, have always been one of my all time favorite vehicles... I have loved them for years; whenever I saw an ad for a 3rd or 4th gen on the back cover of the National Geographic magazine, I would always save it. Time passed, I got a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina for a first car and I drove that for several years. This 4Runner sort of found me by accident - one day, I randomly looked online, curious to see if prices on used 3rd gens had come down enough for me to even remotely think about owning one in the next few years. This one caught my eye, especially with the ARB - I had never seen an aftermarket front bumper replacement on an SUV before, let alone a 4Runner! I bought the 4Runner in March 2012 (98K miles) and drove it 1600+ miles home, cross country, with absolutely no problems/issues.
Side note (12/2014): These rigs were expensive back in the day, you got what you paid for. Now, if you can be content with an older vehicle, then you can get some serious quality for cheap. MSRP for a '98 SR5 4x4 was $26,818 in 1997. In 2013's dollars (adjusting for inflation), that means the MSRP is $38,924! I'm driving a nearly $40k vehicle for much less than a quarter of that!
Goals: The mods will be slow in coming, in part that I'm currently a student with a limited budget. All in all, I want to make it into a hybrid expedition rig/daily driver. This means getting the best MPGs possible without compromising on off road capabilities. I also want to keep this accessible to family and friends to ride in. Hence why I probably won't lift this rig.
