You need to treat what's there now. Scrape it down as far as you can, then prime and paint it. Doesn't have to be pretty, as you most likely won't even see it. I plan on going under mine and doing the same to any spots I see. If left untreated it will get worse. At least this way you can try to stop and/or prevent any further damage.

Agreed. It will slow down getting it out of a rust-prone environment, but you'll want to do some maintenance to stop it. It won't take much more than some good ol' elbow grease.

I'm a little confused... Millerad1651 says that I should prime 'n paint, you say elbow grease...

Should I sand it and use grease? Or prime 'n paint? Is one better than the other?

If I use grease, what kind of stuff should I use? If I'm in a dusty environment, isn't that going to make dirt stick to the frame?

Lol. It's just a figure of speech. I meant that it won't cost you much money to fix it, just a good day or so of work.

LOL! I do think I have heard of using grease to keep it rust free... ah well. I'll have to find some paint somewhere.

Yep, there is an undercoating grease, but it is such a mess to deal with. Sanding and painting is the way to go, if you can do it. Post some pics of the rusty spots if you want.

Okay... I'll attach some up... One spot that's very visible is a rusty spot on my ARB bumper... Might have to find some matching paint or touch it up very carefully...

These are the photos of the undercarriage that I have for now, the worse overall is in the back, as well as the rim of the spare tire... worth painting the spare rim or replacing?

Doesn't look too bad. Get under there, do some good sanding, scrubbing and painting and you'll be good to go. You can do a thorough job by removing what you can and prepping and painting it separately. That skid for example probably has some good rust going on the other side of it.

What do you mean by "removing what you can and prepping and painting it separately"? You mean take the skid off and work on it off the vehicle?

Also, I'm assuming I can just use any kind of paint under there? Latex, etc? What about like a spray on, out of a can? Plasti dip? (probably not plasti dip since it's not very durable)... any recommendations for a good undercoating?

Exactly. Will ensure that you do a real thorough job and a much less chance of the rust returning. Obviously it will take longer, but the end results will be worth it.

Ah, so I can work on it in more comfortable conditions (i.e. not under the vehicle)... gotcha!

I edited the previous post to ask about paint...

You can use any kind of paint you want, but I wouldn't recommend it. The results will vary immensely. I would use a paint that is going to be resistant to rust. There are paints specific for this type of application.

I would use this or something like it:

VHT Roll Bar & Chassis Paint

Running boards, rust treatment/sanding are next, as well as an external tranny cooler... Probably all going down this summer! :gun4:

No problem. Maybe some guys from the rusty NE will chime in on their experiences. Thanfully, mine doesn't have a spec of rust on it.

Just stay out of the Build Threads sticky if you want to keep your MPG's good!
 
Recalled Rear Coils

I took my T4R to the local Toyota dealership to see if any work had been done on the recalls (the rear coils and possibly the LBJ's)...Turns out, there is no recall for the 98's for LBJ's... BUT, my rear coils have already been replaced!

They were replaced around 90,000 miles, so I have only 10K on my rear coils! Practically brand new rear suspension when I bought it! :D

It's a Smittybuilt 8,000 LB winch... And it's only $300! Other ones cost like $800, so I'm not sure what the deal is?

I have the XRC 8 and it works great. It is important to note it is not waterproof...the solenoid is not protected. However, you can remedy this with a sealant if you're handy that way. I have read on the I H8 Mud forums that people have dunked them without issues. Just something to consider. Smitty does make the X2O version that is waterproof, but you'll shell out an extra hundred for that. Also, if you want to save 30 lbs, it might behoove you to eventually swap out the cable for synthetic line...safer that way too. That's my 2 cents...I'm certainly not claiming to be a winch expert. You got yourself a good rig, by the way...enjoy!

Thanks for the heads up about the waterproofing... Definitely something to consider... and yes, I'd like to swap out the wire for synthetic, I didn't realize it was lighter :ybrick: but I wanted to swap because it's safer...
