farmerjon's T4R Introduction & Build Thread

They are high boots, but I like them that way, they also help to serve as protection against rattlesnakes when I'm out in the field.

The physical test for wildland firefighting is 3 miles with a 45 lb. pack in 45 minutes. on a track lol. harder than it sounds!

And, no, they don't let me anywhere near the action lol. I do know a number of wildland firefighters though, we have quite a large number of them that live in my area...

Working for DNR was probably a lot of fun, what did you do for them?

Oh yeah i was terrified of rattle snakes. there were so many on some of the projects we did. I don't blame you, and the ankle support is nice too.

ah yes the infamous Red Card test, I got to do it with a weighted vest, on a track, so it wasn't so bad, It's nothing like hiking with that pack though I hated those things!

DNR was pretty cool, I just worked on the type II crew. We mostly did week campouts and cut big ass trees down. We also did some controlled burns and then of course get flown into some crazy big fires.

The only downside with wildland is your always on call so summer vacations were a nada. I missed a ton of fun stuff because I had to stay within the 2 hours or whatever. but it wasn't bad

Stay tuned!

It is not often I have 4Runner updates worthy of a post in the build thread - but I have two updates (a small one and a bigger one) coming soon that I've been wanting/waiting for for quite sometime...

Cant wait to see what they are! Any hints or are we in the dark here?!

Nse.

Well... here is one mod, the one I referred to in the previous post as the mod for the back of the rig...

Can you spot the newest mod?

'Never Stop Exploring' by farmerjon93, on Flickr

Something that I've been wanting to do for about four months, finally got it made and applied...

'Never Stop Exploring' with a logo I designed/created from one of my photos. (borrowed the slogan from 'The North Face' but different font) Fits with the concept of the 4Runner and my constant use of it for the next adventure and exploration, whether a new mountain range or new life experiences...

What do you think?

Awesome sticker, I'd totally rock that. The best stickers are the ones you custom order and nobody else can say they have. You take the blue ribbon on that one!

Thanks man! Much appreciated! I know, right, I wanted something unique and it was pretty fun to put it together...

I've thought about making these available to buy if there's enough interest, probably with a slightly different mountain logo or something :D

Gonna get your US States visited sticker drawn up and applied soon? I like that idea, especially on the RTT!

If you do end up making them available, I may definitely be interested!

And yes I will, I have a little twist on that as well that nobody else can say they have. Custom stickers are the best!

Really like that decal - it's a motto I try to live by! My 9-5 engineering job seems to be in direct conflict to that sometimes, but every once in a while, the two agree... regardless, I like it!!

I have always been reluctant to put stickers on the back window, have you noticed if rolling it up/down will damage it?

Edit: What is the second (interior) mod you mentioned?!

Thanks fish0281! That's one of my favorite slogans, I borrowed that from 'The North Face' haha.

As for stickers in the back window, I am the type that is reluctant to put stickers all over my rig, for various reasons, I personally prefer a clean look. But, I like having one or two decals that either really go with the truck (like this one) or represent something that I really like while also being neutral (i.e. no politics or stuff like that).

I put it where it is for several reasons - one, it is out of the way of the wiper blade (move your wiper and see the path before you put stickers on), two, it looks better off-center than dead center... As for the sliding window, if you look really closely when you slide your window, the window moves IN towards the interior ever so slightly before it goes down - try yours and see. That's what let me know that it would be okay to put a sticker in the bottom part... I have rolled the window a number of times since then, no problems!

Interior mod is gonna be awesome!! That's all I'm gonna say!

Thanks for reading! :)

Changed oil/filter & rotated tires.

More of a self note...

changed the oil/filter for the second time since owning it, and rotated the tires for the first time... Was fun trying to jack up a STOCK-lifted 4Runner, sure is wayyy up there! Had to use to jacks, one to lift the frame, and one to lift the individual suspension to keep it high enough to get the tires on and off.

Mileage 106,500 (roughly). Over 5,000 miles since the last oil change. I know, I pushed it a little, but not that much over 5K. Mostly highway miles.

Can do oil changes now with the skid plates on in about 10-15 minutes or less!! :D Got a case of OEM Denso oil filters for $50 or $5/filter. Pretty sweet!

Also (hopefully) fixed my leaking carburetor on the Honda TLR200 dirtbike, so that was another project today, I'm pretty happy with today's results.

In other news, I found a big rusty hole in my frame, :( :( :( It is under the rear passenger door, where the arm attaches to the frame, so it is a vulnerable spot, and all the worst rust on the truck is there, there really isn't much rust elsewhere on the rig... So am gonna try to get that welded up ASAP and continue with my plans to rust treat this summer with some OSPHO and paint protection.

Cheers mates!

So...Not anything exciting, but I got my rusty frame hole welded up by a local shop.

(Thread: Of mufflers and rusty frame holes.)

All Welded up... by farmerjon93, on Flickr

Of course, this is sans muffler. I bought this as a replacement: Walker Exhaust 55054 Muffler Assembly-Quiet-FlowSS

Hoping to get it installed soon. The closest shop to do it is about 30 miles away. This truck is LOUD, even to a deaf guy, haha. Duh, mufflers muffle the sound, but I had no idea how much they muffle it.

Cheers!

Glad you got that frame hole patched up! Looks real good too. And they definitely are much louder without mufflers. I ran open headers on my Mustang for the last day of senior year (high school) it was a blast to drive, and to my eardrums.

Love the sticker too! I'd take one of those but I'm not sure where to put it. The spot you chose is perfect but I have a spare tire blocking that area.... Want to make one that will go across the windshield?

That's a pretty cool way to celebrate the last day of high school! :) I'm actually looking forward to driving 30 miles to the shop, so that I can hear it in a variety of situations (like in town, on the open highway, etc).

As for the sticker, I would be more than happy to get you one, but I would need to figure out someone to print it. The guy who did it for me was really nice, it was more of a one time, small operation thing... How about this... I'll put it on my to-do list, and after I finish some classes this week, I'll redraw it up in Illustrator (to make it easier to give to potential printers), and then get some estimates. I think it would be in the range of $20-30 (?) for one for your windshield. Are you saying you would want one to go on the top of your windshield, the entire length?

Thanks for reading in, Tyler!

Yes the entire thing haha. I've always been a fan of a good windshield banner. Ever since I saw that white truck with the shrockworks banner I've been looking for one that I would actually want.

I'll measure mine, and see how tall it would be (proportionately, of course) when it is as wide as my windshield... This could be interesting! I would be honored if you ran my decal! :trophy:

Yea that would be the only thing. If it ended up being a foot tall might have to scrap it. But I doubt it would be just by looking at it. I'd love to run it!

Not really much of a build update, but a nod to my ARB:

I whacked my first deer in my 4Runner! Was going almost 70 MPH, saw the deer, managed to slow down to about 30 before I hit a small, young doe. She did the stop, drop, and roll, then bounded away...

This was the damage...

Blood... by farmerjon93, on Flickr

Some hair and blood. That's it! by farmerjon93, on Flickr

AKA: NO damage. ARB handled it pretty sweet!

Parting shot! Note: rain is unusual around here, so been a lot of rain driving!

4R at the Res. by farmerjon93, on Flickr

Forgot how bright my lights were!

Got the Rig weighed today - 4,600 lbs with all my gear and myself... Not too bad! Thought it would be over 5,000 lbs.

Nothing new to report - a couple new light wheeling trips have been documented in the photolog.
