Final fix for intermittent no-crank on the 22re.

RaD4Runner, based on my reading you are the 4runner expert and hopefully the one to solve my problem. I am working on a 87 4runner, with a manual transmission, 4x4 and 22RE engine. The symptoms; the classic it will start for a few days with no problems and then... I need to be jumped, need a new battery or a new starter ect. Well I have a new battery and a new starter and now the only way to get her going to to Jump start (towing or pushing). Its hot in FL and i am sick of pushing her. I have completed your starter relay fix and still no start. I am out of ideas, i have checked all fuzes and all are good. the Battery is maintaining 12v even while trying to start. the only thing i can think of is that i fried the starter in all of my experimentation. ANY and ALL thoughts are helpful.

It's been said a couple of times - when the truck won't start, leave the key in the On position, truck in N or Park with the ebrake engaged, and jump the starter solenoid straight to the positive post on the battery. If the truck starts when you do this, you have a wiring issue. If it does not, you have a battery or starter issue.

Do this FIRST. Before you replace anything else, before you get a jumpstart from anybody else, do this test.

Florida is a long way from So Cal. We could not help you if you do not help us visualize what you have in front of you. Do you hear, see, feel anything?

EXACTLY where are you measuring battery voltage? At battery post? If at post and battery voltage does not drop at all, that means no current is going to the battery. Are you sure your battery connection and ground connections are good?
Good electrical connection means bare, shiny metal contacting bare shiny metal. Gun-metal gray is not good electrical connection.

Rad4, When the key is turned to ign position i hear a low humming noise which i assume is the AFM working. it sounds to be coming from the intake.

I am getting one click when i move from ACC to IGN but that is it. I am not getting a dead battery click at all; the dash lights up, headlights and all other accessories work.

I have been measuring the battery voltage at the posts. The voltage drops a little 12.75 -> 12.55 -> 12.35 (rough numbers) but each time i tried to start, it would drop a few 100ths of a volt. I will take your advice and double check my grounds tomorrow morning.

Gotta say...I had the intermittent no-start issue. KidV, RAD, you guys are awesome. Got the relay, wired it up, BAM. No more issues. I did end up getting a brand new ignition and replaced starter contacts just for a little extra insurance.

Now I really need to fix some of the crappy wiring, but you guys totally rock. Thank you for the great information!:thanks::thanks::thanks:

Kid and Rad4, thanks for your dedication to this site. I managed to fix my issues, the positive lead on the starter was slightly loose. As I was trouble shooting the issue I noticed the weak and shotty wire. Ill be following your recommended fix and making some upgrades. Thanks again.

Awesome, guys!
Like I always like to stress, Toyota components are bullet-proof. The problems, if any, are in the way they are put together. (Ex. starter relay wiring, headlight wiring). Therefore, before we assume a component is bad, let's check wiring, cleanliness of contacts, security of fasteners.
BTW, sunrise in Little Blair Valley, Anza-Borrego Desert, CA, where we like to camp and go for little hikes...

Welcome to the forum, Mate! It wud help if u put in ur signature year-model-engine-transmission, because those matter when schematics/parts vary from one truck to another. Starter relay fix applies to all first-gen MoreFunners. However, there are variations. Some have no relay while some have relay but are wired wrong at the factory.

Glad to know. Yes, you have auto transmission so the neutral safety switch takes the current load, and power has to travel all the way to it then back to starter. Not ideal conditions.

May we know how you did it? What relay? how you tapped power?

I did the same set up KidV did with the Bronco relay, with the only difference that i added a wire from the battery negative post to the relay and also i still have to add a fuse close to the battery positive post to avoid any accidents from happening. I'll take pics. tomorrow and thank you again, you guys rock.

Hi guys,
While on Yotatech, we came across the schematic of 1989 4Runner, 22RE manual. It is also wired wrong. Unfortunately, I do not know where wires are ran/routed and how accessible they are, so I do not have a write-up on how to rewire.
Here's the schematic for the 1989 22RE manual showing improperly-wired starter relay from the factory (in red rectangle):

So I bought the hot shot kit. Once I got it open, and started poking around under the hood, it got a little tricky. It's designed for vehicles which have solenoids with posts, not spades.

So rather than mess with that, the path of least resistance was to go with RAD4Runner's solution.

About $10 in parts at the auto store, and simple install.
Just gotta know which wire to cut!!

So far so good. Obviously time will tell. But this fix makes a lot of sense.

I never took any pics though, so great to have RAD4Runner's info as well (I also didn't fuse the wire which I should have).

It's been six months since I did RAD's relay mod.
My truck has started every single time since. Zero problems.

Dude, You guys are my best friends.. had to tow our 1985 Pickup home the other day due to “click, no start syndrome” tried knocking on starter... cleaned afm, etc with negative results.

Luckily I stumbled on this forum feed and how to. Like KidV, I bypass the starter solenoid to the battery with the key in “ON” position and started to crank and turn on immediately.

I will have to use this setup temporarily and get the relay and parts later for a more permanent fix.. but again thank you! At least I didn’t get a new battery, starter etc.
