FINALLY got my 87 back!

A year after moving to WV my 87's motor dies at 258k miles, and yes I killed it by overheating it (first time was thermostat, replaced that then it really overheated a month later, got me home then steam billowed out the grill!) Anyway it was sittin all summer so I traded a rusty 89 k5 blazer for an engine rebuild.
Finally got it back, theres two things Im concerned about..
1. The engine oil is black and it has maybe 250 miles on the rebuild.
2. SMALL oil leak from pan gasket, Ive read tightening too much is bad, should I just leave it?

Im changin the oil today but I was wonderin if pitch black is normal after a rebuild?

No it is not normal for the oil to be black with 250 miles on it, do you trust the people that did the rebuild? And did they rebuild yours or just drop some motor in it that they pulled from a wreak, hell at least they could have changed the oil.
 
Always worries me when I see the guys pulling motors at the local yards. Always thinking to myself, yep..someones getting ripped off.
 
Its the same block. He said he put sythentic in it, its otherwise running great aside from the exhaust leak from a cracked manifold. The original head was also cracked so its been replaced, used but machined at local machine shop. The agreed value of my k5 was 1500 bucks (it was a mudbogger not street legal) so needing another head was a surprise.
So whats the reason the oil is black? Anything I can test for or do ?

You could send a sample out to be tested, but at this point i would dump the oil that is in it, and put some new, at least you will know whats in it. Be sure to put a new oem filter also. About the only way oil gets dark black is by not being changed in like forever. Did you happen to see the head that was cracked, just wondering about being all gunked up?
 
Well, quite honestly - the pan shouldn't be leaking. You should probably drop it and clean it up. Then - use Permatex's The Right Stuff 1 Minute Gasket. This is the only stuff I use now. You can put it into service immediately.
 
If it is a truly rebuild motor the oil will darken more quickly than normal. Black is in need of changing yesterday (usually).
But with a newly rebuilt motor they dirty the oil fairly quickly.

As to the pan gasket never use the cork gasket on a 22re motor. They always leak. Always use a form of rtv or permatex like suggested above.
