On a separate note, the GTI looks great. I love my Audi for driving the curvy paved roads.

Update: Last week I ordered the new-to-me engine from LKQ for $775 with a 6 month warranty, it's out of another 03 4Runner that was totaled at 89k miles. We're going through and doing the timing belt, water pump, and plugs while it's on the engine stand. The only issue at the moment is that the donor motor was out of a 2wd truck and doesn't have the wiring harness for the transfer case so this week we'll be looking into swapping that over. Other than that if all goes as planned and no big hiccups we should be turning the key this weekend. Fingers crossed!

Thanks guys! It was the biggest project we've ever attempted and it felt great. I had some serious butterflies when I went to turn it over for the first time. Then when it ran smooth with no check lights after one small fuel leak and a wire that was pulled out of the pin it was just great. 100 miles later and the new motor is running smooth with no issues to report.

Drove and washed it for the first time in 6 months.
On the second picture: Since the steel bumper has a gap between it and the body, Why not use material similar to the OEM mudflap to cover it? Drill some holes in the lip of the bumper, and use the OEM holes, then just use some rubber or something to cover that gap? It could be a hiding place for a bunch of crap in the bumper, and it doesn't seem... Preferable to have to pull the bumper and clean lol.

Nope I don't think it was. I've still been too busy to really post a write-up of sorts. When I purchased the motor from LKQ they charged a $250 core charge. So I'll be giving it back to them once I put it back together.

$250? Dude, honestly, I'd say keep the old one. Build it up with some super duper power. Make it a side project along with the 4R itself. You could then swap it back in OR sell a build 2uz for a lot more than you put into it.
